Super Bowl LV | Predictions for the 2021 Super Bowl

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers sprang a surprise by eliminating Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers from the post-season to give us the Super Bowl LV match-up of our dreams. The experienced hand of Buccanners’ quarter-back Tom Brady, who will be looking to add to his already ridiculous Super Bowl statistics, against the Kansas City Chiefs’ poster boy Patrick Mahomes. Our Super Bowl 2021 preview and predictions look at whether the hype surrounding the match on social media, which it has billed as the GOAT versus the baby GOAT, is justified.

Is the hype justified?

We’ve already touched on it so let’s answer the question early doors. The hype around Super Bowl LV is absolutely justified. Look at how the respective careers of Brady and Mahomes are panning out and then throw into the mix that it’s the first time in Super Bowl history that a side will play the biggest game in football on home turf and LV promises an awful lot. Whether or not it is one of the greatest Super Bowls of all time is yet to be seen. So what are our Super Bowl 2021 predictions? Read on to find out.

 

 

Regular Season Review

The Kansas City Chiefs strolled along in the regular season. They posted a 14-2 record, with one of their losses coming in their last regular-season game against the LA Chargers. In that game numerous players, including Mahomes, were rested. Despite the impressive record, you could probably argue they didn’t look as good as the prior year when their record was worse at 12-4.

Of course, with Super Bowl LV effectively an away match for the Chiefs, it might be worth noting that both their regular season losses came at Arrowhead, meaning that the their record on the road was an impeccable 8-0; that’s a rarity for any team. Central to that record was Mahomes. He was a notable absentee from the last fixture of the season but he still tallied impressive numbers. He threw for 4,740 yards with 38 touchdowns. Had he been selected in the final match, he would have almost definitely posted back-to-back 5,000 yard seasons.

For their opponents on Sunday evening, their road to Super Bowl LV wasn’t quite as smooth. Brady, who changed teams in the off-season, was working with a new coach, offensive coordinator and teammates around him. The season began with questions over who relied on who more; the Patriots on Brady or Brady on the Patriots. The fact the Buccaneers found themselves with an 11-5 record and in the Super Bowl, whilst the Pats are in disarray, perhaps settles that debate.

Yes, Brady, who finished the season third in passing yards and second in touchdowns has been key, but the whole team came into the playoffs in good form having won their last four with three of those victories coming in rather convincing fashion. Their last loss is a notable one though; they lost to the Chiefs.

 

Route to the Super Bowl

The teams have had vastly different routes to reach the Super Bowl. The Chiefs were afforded the first week of the playoffs off after finishing as the number one seed in the AFC. The Bucs were not afforded such luxury and had to do it the hard way.

 

Buccaneers

Let’s start with the Bucs, who faced three away games. First came Washington in the NFC wild card face off. Brady was hardly on song but still threw for 381 yards and two touchdowns as they won an evenly contested affair in the fourth quarter.

Next up was the match they’ll really be clinging to come February 7th. We’ve already mentioned their last loss was to the Chiefs and their divisional tie pitted them against the Saints who had absolutely walloped them 38-3 in game week nine. Not this time, however. The defence picked off Drew Brees three times and Brady did what Brady does going in the other direction.

That brought forward the challenge of Green Bay, who were again favourites to progress. Again, it looked like being all about Brady – and in many ways it was – but after an excellent first half saw his team go in 21-10 ahead the second half was somewhat different. Brady was pretty abject. Thankfully, Rodgers didn’t fair much better and the Bucs went marching through.

 

Chiefs

The Chiefs have navigated the post-season with relative ease, until this point at least, although the scorelines were a little bit deceiving. First up was the Cleveland Browns, which ended in a 22-17 victory. That result might suggest a tight and tense affair but it really wasn’t. The Chiefs could do as they wanted. It was 22-10 at one stage in the third quarter and the Browns were only let back in when Mahomes vacated the field for the final quarter.

The Chiefs’ next game was a potential banana skin, which arrived in the shape of Josh Allen and the Bills. The Bills took a 9-0 lead to present the idea that the Chiefs were on the ropes but quarters two and three saw Mahomes outscore the Bills 31-6. The contest was as good as over with the match eventually ending 38-24.

 

The Players to watch in Super Bowl LV

As we move onto our Super Bowl 2021 predictions, we won’t spend any further time talking up Mahomes and Brady. You’ll be well aware of our admiration for both after reading this far. So, who else could play a big role come game day?

For the Chiefs, we’re citing Tyreek Hill, who was almost unplayable against the Bills with nine catches for 172 yards, and Travis Kelce. Like Hill, Kelce has shown his qualities on route to the Super Bowl. The Bucs aren’t toothless themselves though and three time Pro Bowler, Mike Evans, can prove a real handful whilst Chris Godwin will arrive in a confident mood after his five catch 110-yard performance against the Packers.

Canadian Grammy Award winner The Weeknd will be performing his biggest hits, such as Blinding Lights, at the halftime show this year. How will his performance match up to some of the other best Super Bowl halftime shows ever?
