Who scored the most goals in a Championship season?
Widely considered to be one of the most exciting divisions in the world, the EFL Championship is one of those leagues where anything can happen. The combination of time-honored players that have seen it all, next season’s up-and-coming prodigies and some of the country’s most die-hard fans is a recipe for excitement that any sports fanatic will enjoy. Top-flight quality lives and dies in the Championship, with many of today’s greats having laced up their boots on EFL soil. Today we take a look at who has scored the most goals in a single Championship season.

5. Daryl Murphy (Ipswich)
An A-grade example of one of football’s journeyman, 37-year old Daryl Murphy has been at the front of the ranks for eleven different teams in his playing career so far. The Waterford number 7 recently rejoined his former Irish side, Waterford, after 15 years in the UK at the likes of Sunderland, Ipswich Town, Celtic, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.
Murphy’s most notable achievements come in the form of two league wins, one with Sunderland in 2006 and the other with Newcastle in 2016. He was also the Championships top goalscorer for the 2014/15 season where he secured 27 goals for Ipswich Town, the joint fourth most goals in a Championship season.
4. Rickie Lambert (Southampton)
As far as fairy tales in Football go, Lambert’s move to Liverpool is as close as they come, though it soon became a nightmare.
Dropped from his boyhood team aged just 15, Lambert endured in the lower leagues for 11 years before a Southampton run-of-form in 2012 pushed them back into the Premier League. Lambert’s dreams came full circle in 2014 when he was snatched up by Liverpool off the back of 5 impressive seasons with The Saints – albeit a short-lived move which only lasted a single season.
He played a pivotal role in Southampton’s promotion run in 2011/12 as he claimed the Championship Golden Boot after putting away 27 goals across the whole season.
3. Ross McCormack (Leeds)
Before his full-time move to the English leagues in 2008, Ross McCormack’s professional career began with a four-year spell in Scotland for Rangers and Motherwell. His short loan to Doncaster Rovers in 2006 would set up a common theme for the Scottish youngster’s future footballing affairs.
A turbulent transfer (with a hefty price-tag) to Aston Villa in 2016 and a series of bad press had fans divided. McCormack spent a large chunk of his time out on loan with Nottingham Forest, Melbourne, Central Coast Mariners and eventually back to his old club Motherwell.
The highlights of his career so far have come with his time spent at Leeds United where he captained the team for his remaining games, as well as taking home the Championship scoring title for the 2013/14 season with 28 goals.
2. Teemu Pukki (Norwich)
Finnish international Teemu Pukki is next up on our list of Championship Golden Boot winners. A well-travelled life in top-flight Football, Pukki’s career has taken him from KTP in his native Finland, over to Sevilla, Schalke 04, Celtic, Brøndby and now Norwich City; Six clubs in six different countries.
Norwich’s promotion run in 2018 was made possible with the help of Pukki’s scoring tally – a huge 29 goals across all games. He also played a vital role in Finland’s first ever major tournament run, scoring 10 goals in 10 games in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.
1. Glenn Murray (Crystal Palace)
The first-place finisher and record holder for most goals scored in a single Championship season is none other than Glenn Murray.
The epitome of old-school English football, Murray worked his way up from Non-League Workington Reds through to the Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion in 2016.
Loans and transfers included, Murray’s whole career to date has spanned across eleven clubs, with achievements including a League Two promotion with Carlisle United, a League One promotion with Brighton and the 2012/13 Championship Golden Boot for their bitter rivals Crystal Palace with a whopping 30 goals.
