Who has the most Premier League player of the month awards?

The Premier League has many of the world’s best players battling for success week in and week out across England. At the end of each month, the player who has shown the best form reaps the benefits of their hard work with the coveted Player of the Month award. Many of the game’s modern greats such as Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard, Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Henry have all won the award but all, surprisingly, miss out on this list. So which five players have the most Premier League player of the month awards ever?

5 players with the most Premier League player of the month awards

  1. Wayne Rooney (5)

Despite being a polarizing figure off the pitch, it’s hard to argue about Wayne Rooney’s skills on it. The all-time England top goalscorer regularly slammed goals in on a regular basis for both Everton and Manchester United and was England’s biggest football star in the early 2010’s. It’s not surprising to see Rooney earn his fair share of Player of the Month awards winning 5 during his time in the top flight winning his first in 2005 and his last in 2010 – all during his time at Old Trafford. It’s another set of awards that sit brightly on a stacked trophy cabinet in Chez Rooney.

  1. Robin Van Persie – 5

With perhaps the most dangerous left foot in Premier League history, it’s not surprising to see that Robin Van Persie was a multiple award winner of the player of the month award. Having enjoyed mega-goalscoring sprees both with Arsenal and Manchester United, RVP was always ready to let fly with a spectacular shot at a moment’s notice. His 5 Premier League player of the months awards means he is tied fourth on our list with Wayne Rooney and were very much scattered, with three coming with Arsenal and 2 with United – including winning one during the very first month after moving to Old Trafford. Van Persie’s goals have left fond memories with many fans in the Premier League so it’s not hard to see why he won so many awards during his time in England.

  1. Harry Kane – 6

When Harry Kane emerged as a goal threat at White Hart Lane, it was soon clear that he was going to become a star in the game. That promise has been very much fulfilled by the England captain who has earned 6 Player of the Month awards so far in his burgeoning career. Kane has consistently been at the top of the Golden Boot race season after season so it’s not surprising to see him constantly rewarded for those efforts. His best form was arguably at the start of 2015 where he consecutively won the awards in January and February showcasing a rare double in this category. With still quite a way to go still in his career, there could be plenty more on the horizon for the current England captain. Will he have the most Premier League player of the month awards of all by the time he retires?

  1. Steven Gerrard – 6

When you play such a prominent role for a major club, you are bound to be noticed for your efforts and Steven Gerrard is living proof of this. Gerrard’s tireless performances throughout his career for Liverpool where often pivotal to winning games and no one did it so consistently like Stevie G! His knacks for both goals and assists made him one of the best midfielders in the world and saw him win 6 awards during his career with a staggering 13 years separating his first and last success. When both the likes of Pele and Maradona cite you as the best in the world, it only seems right to have that form acknowledged by the league authorities.

  1. Sergio Aguero – 7

Officially the most dangerous striker to ever arrived on British shores, there has been very little that Sergio Aguero has yet to accomplish in England. The Argentine striker is perhaps still one of the most lethal strikers in the penalty area and always find a way to score when everything else seems lost. His constant ability to find the back of the net has earnt him more Premier League player of the month awards than any other player in EPL history with 7 starting from 2013 and including 2020. There is still more to come for Aguero and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Kun reach double figures before he calls it a day at the Etihad.
