TPP clearly saw leg one as a tight win for either side, covering 1-0 and 2-1 victories for both teams. Matej Vydra’s 70th minute goal gave Derby the lead and the Syndicate looked to be progressing past leg one. A late scare came when Idrissa Sylla hit the woodwork for QPR, but the 1-0 selection came in for the Syndicate.
Leg two came from Spain, as Espanyol hosted Real Betis. TPP was backing the home side to win this and grab a few goals, covering 2-1, 3-0 and 3-1. A Real Betis goal in the 78th minute put the Syndicate’s progression in doubt. But, in the 87th minute, Javi Fuego equalised for Espanyol, giving the Syndicate a glimmer of hope. Ex- Arsenal player Jose Antonio Reyes stepped up in the 90th minute and made it 2-1.
The Syndicate was now through to leg three in the pool!
The Merseyside Derby made up leg three, with a 2-1 and 3-1 home win covered as well as a 1-1 draw. The Syndicate were expecting excitement in this one.
As is usually the case, this game did not disappoint! Mane put the Reds 1-0 ahead inside 10 minutes and Liverpool looked on path for an easy win. Matthew Pennington equalised for the Toffees in the 28th minute, leaving the Syndicate praying for no more Everton goals. Two goals for the home side gave Liverpool a 3-1 win and sent the Syndicate into the final leg!
