Scholfield Speaks: On his weekend rides, Christmas and who to follow next year

Following a fantastic day at Hereford last Saturday when he rode a 25/1 winner in Buster Edwards, Nick Scholfield returns to talk about Christmas, Boxing Day, and a horse to keep an eye on next year. Read his latest weekly column below.

On Christmas Day…

Obviously when it comes to Christmas, the racing has to come first. I’ll make sure I enjoy Christmas day but, come 4 o clock, I’ll be studying the form for Boxing Day and then hopefully we’ll be busy thereafter. You’ve got the Welsh National a day later at Chepstow which should be a good meeting and there’s also good racing at Kempton. Then we have plenty of good racing all over New Year. So really at Christmas I’m just trying to stay fit and healthy to keep my weight down, so will have to make sure I don’t eat too many mince pies.

On Boxing Day…

It’s going to be a very busy time after Christmas. With the ground being very wet we’re really counting down to a busy period of racing starting on Boxing Day. The entries for Boxing Day come out today and then the declarations on Monday. I’m pretty sure I’m heading to Wincanton and will hopefully have a couple of decent rides, including Kissesforkatie who had a good win at Wincanton earlier this month. It should be a good card and it’s a local track for me so it’s always good to get a winner there if we can.

On one to follow next year…

One to follow. I’ll give you a horse to follow next year that isn’t all that well known. He finished second in his bumper at Wincanton. It’s a horse for Jeremy Scott called Sizable Sam. He’s a lovely horse sired by Black Sam Bellamy. He finished second in his debut to a Paul Nicholls horse but was only beaten by a short head a few weeks ago. The third place that day, Mont Segur, has come out since and won very impressively so it looks like even better form. He’s a lovely individual and I think he could be making a name for himself next year. I know that Jeremy holds him in very high regard and hopefully he can be another Melodic Rendezvous type for him.
