Rob Cross reveals lifestyle changes after World Championship heartache

Rob Cross admits that his “soul was crushed” with the pain of a first round World Championship exit.

But that drove the Hastings star into a fierce health drive which saw him lose over two stone in just six weeks, in preparation for the PDC Darts Premier League.

Voltage, who was runner-up in last year’s Premier League to Michael van Gerwen, now believes he is finally back in the right place to be a champion again.

Speaking to Phil Lanning, exclusively for Colossus, Rob Cross revealed: “I had told my wife in early December that I didn’t feel right in myself. I knew things had to change, I had to lose weight. So I guess the World Championship first defeat was the biggest kick up the backside I could have been given. It hurt of course it did, my soul was crushed.”

“But it might have been the best thing for me in the long run. I have worked like mad now for six or seven weeks. I’ve been at the gym every day and I’ve lost over two stone and I feel great about myself again.”

“I never knew how nice plain chicken and rice could be. I’ve cut out all carbs. I’m so happy about it and now I love it. It’s not finished yet, now I need my darts lifestyle to fit around my healthy living. That’s maybe the hardest bit. But I feel like a new person. There’s been lots of ups and downs over the last three years. Last year people will think it was bad because I lost in the first round of the Worlds.”

“However I made two finals last year and won the World Matchplay and European Championship, it was a pretty decent season all in all. Of course we all judge our years based on the World Championship result. But I’m still a new boy really so I’m learning all the time.”

Rob Cross goes into the opening night of the Premier League night this week, where he will take on Gerwyn ‘The Iceman’ Price in Aberdeen, feeling as though he has the belief back in his game.

He added: “The old saying ‘fit in body and mind’ is so true. I feel like I’ve got more energy and stamina now to face anything. That hasn’t been the case for a while now. I was a different person. Now I’m back to the old Rob. I’m only hungry for success not for bad food!”
