Richarlison is ready for the next step in his career and Spurs transfer would make sense

Without Richarlison, Everton might not have avoided relegation from the Premier League last season. Indeed, the Brazilian was a driving force for the Toffees as they pulled themselves out of the bottom three in the final few fixtures of the 2021/22 campaign. However, Richarlison deserves more than to be stuck at the wrong end of the table.

After four seasons at Goodison Park, the 25-year-old appears ready for the next step in his career and Tottenham Hotspur are among those interested in signing him this summer. Antonio Conte wants to add another attacker to his squad for next season and Richarlison ticks a lot of boxes. He could be exactly what Spurs need.

Of course, Tottenham already boast one of the strongest attacking units in the Premier League. Harry Kane and Son Heung-min scored 40 league goals between them last season with Dejan Kulusevski a key figure after joining from Juventus in the January transfer window. Conte has a lot to work with in the final third with Kane and Son’s particular partnership one of the most natural around.

Richarlison wouldn’t be guaranteed a starting spot under Conte, but his versatile means he would still get a lot of game time. Tottenham will be back in the Champions League next season and need options in all areas of the pitch. This has led to reports that Conte will demand as many as eight new signings this summer.

As a goalscorer, Richarlison is proven at Premier League level. The Brazilian notched double figures last season despite Everton’s struggles over the course of the campaign and has scored more goals for the Toffees than any other player since he joined from Watford in 2018. That goal threat would make Spurs a more dangerous team.

Off the ball, Richarlison would be a good fit for Conte’s team. The Brazilian knows how to lead a high press from the front and can play as a centre forward, number 10 or either wing. It’s possible Conte could use Kane and Richarlison as a front two with either Kulusevski or Son filling space around them as a floating auxiliary attacker.

This summer presents Tottenham with a golden opportunity to make genuine strides forward. Their top four finish last season propelled them back into the Champions League and with that Spurs will find it easier to attract top tier talent. It gave Conte a platform to build upon with some even suggesting Tottenham will be title contenders next season.

Spurs have already added Ivan Perisic to their squad this summer with recent reports claiming the North London club are close to securing a deal for Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma. It seems likely that Tottenham will add at least one new central defender to their squad with Alessandro Bastoni and Gleison Bremer believed to be on their radar. Christian Eriksen could also return as a free agent.

But the signing of Richarlison would reflect the true ambition of a club that wants to challenge for major honours with Conte at the helm. Liverpool have shown how important it is to have several options in the final third to mitigate the impact of fatigue over the course of a full season. Tottenham could have similar strength.

Reports have also linked Chelsea with Richarlison, but Spurs are on an upward trajectory and the Brazilian can be a key figure for them. Conte is one of the most demanding coaches in European football and that extends to his demands in the transfer market. That he wants Richarlison at Tottenham is in itself a statement on the Brazilian’s quality.
