Musselburgh betting tips | 26th August

Steven Dowler has been in imperious form recently, winning or going within one leg of winning the Place 6 in seven of his last eight previews. He’s back to tackle the Boosted £5,000 Place 6 at Musselburgh on Wednesday. Read his Musselburgh betting tips and join his Syndicate.

13.00 – Maiden Stakes – 7f

Mark Johnston does well around here and his runner BRANSTON LION has an excellent chance of enhancing that record. He’s the most experienced runner in the line-up, so he can put that to good use here under Joe Fanning despite being far from straightforward.

BULLS AYE ran a good race to finish fourth on debut behind two smart sorts in Darvel and Toussarok 37 days ago and a repeat of that performance will ensure he’s very competitive in this moderate contest.

HEIGHTS OF ABRAHAM also ran a nice race when fourth at Ayr 29 days ago and this looks relatively weaker. He should have more to offer representing a yard who does well at this track and in these types of races.

Selections: BRANSTON LION, BULLS AYE, HEIGHTS OF ABRAHAM

13.30 – Handicap – 7f

YUKON MISSION, who attracted support last time out, was denied a clear run on plenty of occasions and can arguably be considered an unfortunate loser. He races from the exact same mark today, so he has to be taken seriously.

Richard Fahey’s filly GRACE AND VIRTUE remains in good form this season having won once and placing second twice on her last three outings. The handicapper has left her alone on a mark of 65, therefore, she can’t be discounted while still well-treated.

WRITTEN BROADCAST has improved with each start this year and was an excellent second over C&D a few weeks ago. The winner is rated 77 so in comparison to today’s field, he must have strong claims of going one better.

Selections: YUKON MISSION, GRACE AND VIRTUE, WRITTEN BROADCAST

14.00 – Handicap – 7f

Although yet to win on the turf, CUSTARD THE DRAGON is very well-handicapped to finally change his fortune. He is arguably better on the AW, but he’s now down to a career low-mark back on this surface and he’s expected to build on his latest creditable fourth at Newcastle.MERRICOURT hasn’t yet threatened to defy his much-reduced mark, but he was only beaten two lengths at Ayr when last seen. He is 2lb lower for this race so he merits plenty of consideration for his shrewd handler.

Of the rest, course specialist BIBBIDIBOBBIDIBOO has to come into the reckoning being a C&D winner, for which her form at the track reads 4, 1, 2 and 2. She has done all of her winning and placed efforts off higher marks and was second over C&D three starts ago off 2lb higher. Ann Duffield’s mare almost took advantage of this mark (59) when last seen, beaten less than a length by a 70-rated rival. With nothing in the same calibre of that horse taking her on today, I’m quietly confident she will get back on the scoresheet.

Selections: CUSTARD THE DRAGON, MERRICOURT, BIBBIDIBOBBIDIBOO

14.30 – Novice Stakes – 5f

Although he’s a short-priced favourite, I just can’t see past Karl Burke’s SIGNIFICANTLY who has a class edge over today’s four rivals. For sure, he has been unfortunate to have not had three 1’s next to his same instead of three 2’s having been touched off by a small-margin on each occasion. His two-length fifth behind Steel Bull in the Group-3 Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood has been strongly advertised since with the third (International Dream) and fourth (Chief Little Hawk) placed horses subsequently winning at a decent level.

Without a doubt, Karl Burke looks to have found his high-class sprinter, who he holds in the highest regard, a penalty kick back in much calmer-waters here. Although Digital is likely to give him some sort of race having done nothing wrong thus far, Significantly should have too many gears and too much class for this field, and is expected to win this impressively, before having his sights set back at a much higher-level, most notably pattern-company.

Selections: SIGNIFICANTLY

15.00 – Handicap – 5f

A race lacking strength in depth, but perhaps INDIAN PURSUIT will capitalise off a career low-mark for John Quinn, who has an outstanding strike-rate at this track. The seven-year-old loves it around here being a four-time C&D winner off marks 61, 65, 59 and 62. He’s clearly well capable of exploiting today’s mark of 50 and having ran well to finish second at Bath most recently which was a step back in the right direction, that should have teed him up nicely to gain a fifth course and distance win.

The other one I want on side is RANGEFIELD EXPRESS who has only won once on the flat, but has been knocking on the door of late to suggest his turn might be near. I’m not overly discouraged by his poor win strike-rate, and sort of step forward from his latest effort ought to be enough to see him involved.

NORTHERN SOCIETY likes it around here with plenty of course and distance form to her name. She is 5lb below her last winning mark, for which came over C&D and having competed in arguably stronger company on her last few starts, she looks set to run a big race for connections.

Selections: INDIAN PURSUIT, RANGEFIELD EXPRESS, NORTHERN SOCIETY

15.30 – Handicap – 5f

This looks a hot race for the grade, but with MILITIA coming here on a roll having won his last two races quite convincingly, I just can’t discount him despite being top-weight. He’s 2-2 over C&D so he has to be of some interest in his current mood.

EEH BAH GUM has to merit consideration being 5lb below his last winning mark. He hasn’t managed to get involved in three starts this year, but placed three times last year off marks of 88 in class-2 company. He has plied his trade well at a higher-level for a while and he’s taken to run a big race dropping down in class. I’ll put him in to round off my Musselburgh betting tips.

Selections: MILITIA, EEH BAH GUM
