The dreaded own goal. One wrong leg placement or a mistimed clearance can be the start of any defender’s nightmare. There’s only one possible response; hang your head in shame, take a deep breath, avoid eye contact with the crowd and wait for the whistle. Many players go their whole careers without knowing how it feels to sink the ball into their own net. For some, it’s just a one-time occurrence. Then there’s the unlucky few, that rare group of footballers that have sent fans and commentators into a frenzy on more than one occasion. Today we take a look at the five players who have scored the most own goals in Premier League history.
Most Premier League own goals ever
Wes Brown – 6
Before he spent his time playing five-a-side with Wayne Rooney, Wes Brown was a defensive force to be reckoned with, especially in the early 2000s. An academy hotshot and key figure in the Man Utd wonder years, Brown also managed to score 6 own goals over the course of his Premier League career.
Those 5 Premier League titles and 2 FA Cups are probably enough to mitigate any own-goal-induced sleepless nights though.
Martin Skrtel – 7
Four-time Slovakian player of the year and Liverpool cult hero Martin Skrtel is next up on the list, with an impressive 7 Premier League career own goals
After a solid 9 seasons with Liverpool in which he racked up 16 goals, 79 clean sheets and countless head bandages, Skrtel is now playing out his days with last season’s surprise Turkish Süper Lig champions İstanbul Başakşehir.
Phil Jagielka – 7
These days it’s rare to see a footballer dedicate their entire playing career to just two clubs and rarer still for that same player to score six own goals. Welcome Phil Jagielka.
The Everton and Sheffield United hero still holds highlight-reel goals in the right direction, claiming a few thunderous 30-yard screamers under his belt, as well as amassing an impressive 40 international caps.
However, he is also joint third on our list of the players with the most own goals in Premier League history after scoring an impressive seven. He even managed to bag an own goal on international duty when England played Hungary in 2010. Luckily, England managed to turn the tide and finished the game 2-1 victors, so no hard feelings for that one.
Jamie Carragher – 7
From two-club hero Phil Jagielka, to one-club legend Jamie Carragher who scored the second most own goals in Premie League history.
With a Premier League career that spanned 17 years in which he sat as Liverpool’s defensive main man, it’s no surprise that Jamie managed to tuck a few away into his own net from time-to-time.
What’s even more impressive is that he actually scored twice as many own goals as he did at at the right end, with 3 goals for Liverpool and 7 own goals in total.
Carragher also holds the very unwanted record of having scored the most own goals in a game, netting two against bitter rivals Manchester United in 1999. Ouch.
Richard Dunne – 10
Winning Manchester City’s player of the year four years in a row is no easy feat. Neither is scoring 10 own goals across your career, the most own goals in Premier League history
Dunne held down the backline for the likes of Everton, Villa, QPR and City, as well as gaining 80 caps for Ireland before retiring in 2015 – he also holds the equally impressive record of the most red cards in the Premier League (tied with Patrick Viera and Duncan Ferguson).
A true Premier League veteran, having played over 430 games, kept 107 clean sheets, scored 11 goals and also holds the coveted record of 10 own goals. A title that any defender would be proud of. However, none of them featured on our list of the best ever Premier League own goals.
