Goodwood Betting Preview

13.50 – Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap – 1m1f

CARADOC did very well to finish second in this race last year off a two pounds higher mark and has shaped better than the result on multiple occasions, including when eighth of 22 in John Smith’s Cup at York last time, where he would have definitely finished a lot closer with a clear passage. He was also second over C&D off a four pounds higher mark back in April, so if he gets the gaps when needed, he’s capable off this mark. KENZAI WARRIOR defied this mark on the all-weather last year and while he couldn’t get involved at Royal Ascot last time, he’s another to have a big effort in him if things go his way. He’s an outsider worth considering in the opener. ETONIAN returned to form when a front-running second last time and given he beat One Ruler easily on debut, he looks well-treated off 97 here.

Selections: CARADOC, KENZAI WARRIOR, ETONIAN

14.25 – Japan Racing Association Vintage Stakes (Group 2) – 7f

Charlie Hills’ GALERON showed a lot of promise when fifth over six furlongs here on debut and built on that promise when beating a subsequent winner back here next time. This Group 1 entrant has a massive chance in this race. I like him a lot for this race. DEAR MY FRIEND is two-from-two and looked professional when scoring at Carlisle last time. He’s a player for the Mark Johnson team as he bids to remain unbeaten.

Selections: GALERON, DEAR MY FRIEND

15.00 – World Pool Lennox Stakes (Group 2) – 7f

SACRED caught the eye when an excellent fifth in the Platinum Jubilee over a trip short of her best and is back over best trip in which she’s two-from-two. That latest effort should have put her spot on for today’s easier assignment and she’s the one to beat. Andrew Balding’s SANDRINE ran a good race when third in the Group 1 Falmouth last time at Newmarket and drops in grade here. She gets all the allowances and is worth another try at this trip given how everything went wrong for her in the Coronation Stakes on her penultimate start. I think she has a much stronger chance than her odds suggest.

Selections: SACRED, SANDRINE

15.35 – Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series) – 2m

A mouthwatering renewal of the feature race on day one of Glorious Goodwood and STRADIVARIUS, who’s won this race four times in the past, cannot be discounted. He ran well from a poor track position to finish third in the Gold Cup and despite his advancing years, he should make a bold bid to end his career at this course unbeaten. KYPRIOS did really well to hold off Mojo Star at Royal Ascot in the Gold Cup and, despite dropping down in trip, he’s an obvious contender under Ryan Moore.

Selections: STRADIVARIUS, KYPRIOS

16.10 – Nicholson Gin Handicap – 5f

STONE OF DESTINY is quirky but he’s down to a career-low mark of 84 and Harry Davies takes off a five pounds. He’s ran some big races here off much higher marks in the past, so if there’s a time he will land another big pot, this could be the time. Roger Varian’s DUSKY LORD didn’t get the clearest of runs when fourth behind Celsius on the July course last time and would have gone close to winning otherwise. He’s been left on the same mark here and has room for manoeuvre off this mark, so he’s got a good chance.

Selections: STONE OF DESTINY, DUSKY LORD

16.45 – British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes – 6f

A big-field maiden in which MISCHIEF MAGIC should get into the frame. He ran a very good race here on debut and that form has worked out well with the winner placing at Royal Ascot next time and the second winning since. With more to come, he should go close here. MASTER OF CHANT shaped well when second at Newbury three weeks ago and could provide the most resistance to the former.

Selections: MISCHIEF MAGIC, MASTER OF CHANT
