Colossus Pick Six – Saturday 13 January

Newcastle v Swansea

Both teams have been sucked into a relegation scrap due to poor recruitment and underinvestment over the summer months. Swansea are bound to sign reinforcements this month, but Newcastle are in real trouble given the current drama over this potential takeover.

This game could go in any which direction, but it is bound to be tense, dramatic, and crucial to either team’s survival.

Crystal Palace v Burnley

Crystal Palace underwhelmed at the start of the season and hence sacked Frank de Boer. They have since bounced back under Roy Hodgson, but will need to do more if they are to secure a place in the Premier League next season.

Burnley are a club who do not need to fear that after Sean Dyche has led them to a whopping seventh place by January. The Clarets have a clear method that is garnering important points and you can expect more of the same in 2018.

Huddersfield v West Ham

Huddersfield have done exceedingly well so far since coming up to the Premier League for the first time in their history. David Wagner has kept to his winning method that got them there in the first place and are reaping the rewards.

While safety is not secure, they are playing at a high level and have recruited well so far this January. On the other hand, West Ham have recruited poorly for some years now and are seeing the effect that has on the team.

While David Moyes has stabilised the club, they are unlikely to move forward unless they have a clear strategy. Expect the Terriers to outclass them in this one.

RB Leipzig v Schalke

RB Leipzig might not have hit the heights of last season’s successful campaign, but they are firmly in the top four race in order to qualify for the Champions League. Perhaps surprisingly, Schalke are second in the league after a fantastic first half of the season.

There are only two points separating second and sixth, in what is an incredibly closer pack hunting Bayern Munich. This is going to be a must see game played out at the Red Bull Arena.

Bournemouth v Arsenal

Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth have improved in their ranking in the league, now up to 16th, but a draw against Brighton in a game they should have won was disappointing.

The Cherries have a huge uphill battle to contain Arsenal, especially with key personnel resting in their FA Cup loss to Nottingham Forest. While that was not a good result, the Gunners will feel confident about trumping Bournemouth with relative ease.

Liverpool v Manchester City

The biggest game of the weekend consists of two giants going head to head. Manchester City are still unbeaten in the league, which makes this tie a tricky encounter for Liverpool.

However, Jürgen Klopp’s side have only conceded four goals at Anfield this season, so this one might be closer than you think. This will not be an easy game for the Champions-elect.
