There have been some fantastic Chelsea vs Man Utd games over the years, with the two rivals having repeatedly gone head to head for league titles, Champions League positions, domestic cups and European cups.

This weekend is no different, with both teams needing a positive result to continue their recent momentum. With six points between the sides in the league, Sunday’s game at Stamford Bridge could have huge implications for what seems set to be a dramatic race for Champions League places.

Chelsea vs. Man United matches often provide plenty of entertainment. We have picked out five of the most memorable modern meetings between the two clubs.

Top 5 Chelsea vs Man Utd games

Chelsea 3-0 Manchester United (29 April 2006, Premier League)

A draw would have been enough to claim the title for Chelsea but an emphatic performance wrapped up a successive league triumph under Jose Mourinho. An early header by William Gallas got Chelsea up and running with a solo special from Joe Cole then followed by Ricardo Carvalho completing the scoring.

For England fans, though, there was concern over an injury sustained by Wayne Rooney late in the game. Rooney departed on a stretcher and though he played half-fit at that summer’s World Cup his tournament ended in ignominy after a petulant stamp on Portugal defender Carvalho.

Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea (21 May 2008, Champions League)

Chelsea vs Man Utd clashes were at their best when it was Mourinho vs Ferguson. A year earlier, Didier Drogba’s goal beat United in the FA Cup final but Alex Ferguson’s side got their revenge on a rain-sodden night in Moscow. European finals between teams from the same country are rare but United and Chelsea failed to put on much of a show in difficult conditions.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s header gave United an advantage that was cancelled out by Frank Lampard, with the Blues seeing out extra time with 10 men after Drogba was sent off for clashing with United defender Nemanja Vidic.

Ronaldo’s miss in the penalty shootout gave Chelsea captain John Terry the chance to seal victory but his slip meant it was United who were singing in the rain after Edwin van der Sar saved Nicolas Anelka’s weak effort.

Manchester United 3-1 Chelsea (18 September 2011, Premier League)

United maintained their perfect start to the 2011-12 season with this bonkers clash that saw goals from Chris Smalling, Nani and Rooney put them 3-0 up at the break. Rooney also failed to convert a penalty as United started on fire, but that miss was not the worst of the day.

Fernando Torres, one of the worst Chelsea signings under Roman Abramovich, had earlier scored his first goal of the season but, after rounding United goalkeeper David de Gea, he somehow fired wide of the resulting open goal.

Chelsea 2-3 Manchester United (28 October 2012, Premier League)

This fiery Chelsea vs Man United clash at Stamford Bridge saw United move within a point of Premier League leaders Chelsea, who ended the game with just nine men.

United were 2-0 up early in the piece thanks to a David Luiz own goal and a classy strike from Robin van Persie, though Chelsea battled back to level through going either side of the interval from Juan Mata and Ramires.

But in the space of five minutes, referee Mark Clattenburg showed two red cards that changed the game, with Javier Hernandez capitalising to score a late winner. First, Branislav Ivanovic was dismissed after he brought down Ashley Young, with few arguing over that decision.

When Torres went down under a challenge from Jonny Evans there seemed to be contact, but Clattenburg thought otherwise and gave the Spain striker his second booking of the game.

United went on to win the title by 11 points, with Chelsea finishing the season in third.

Chelsea 4-0 Manchester United (23 October 2016, Premier League)

Mourinho will forever be remembered as one of the most important managers in Chelsea’s history, but he will wish he could scrub his return to the Bridge from the record books. The Portuguese saw his United side taken apart with Pedro setting the tone for a day to forget by opening the scoring with just 30 seconds on the clock.

Further strikes from Gary Cahill and Eden Hazard added to Mourinho’s misery with even midfielder N’Golo Kante able to add a rare goal to finish off a complete Chelsea performance.

Blues fans serenaded their former hero with chants of “you’re not special anymore” to rub salt into the wound.

Antonio Conte’s men ended the season celebrating regaining the league title with United lagging a massive 24 points behind Chelsea in sixth spot. It was a classic match with demands recognition on our list of classic Man Utd vs Chelsea games.
