Silver Salver winner in line for huge windfall
A bonus of £10,000 on top of the £3,000 first prize awaits the winner of the Colossus Bets Kent Silver Salver at Central Park – if he or she remains unbeaten through the Category Two competition.
Six heats of the longstanding sprint, first run at Southend in 1933, take place at the Kent track on Sunday with big-race sponsor Bernard Marantelli keen to reward perfection in the three-round event over 265m.
Pledging to give connections of the Colossus Bets Kent Silver Salver an additional £10,000 on top of the £3,000 first prize if their greyhound stays unbeaten, Marantelli is intending to cut his potential losses with a ‘cash out’ offer on the night.
“We know there’s plenty of racing between Sunday’s heats and the final on July 19, but we could have some real fun if any greyhound follows up a heat win by landing one of the three semi-finals,” he said. “Then we’ll test the nerve of connections!”
Pool betting operator Colossus Bets will be running jackpot pools on each of the next three Sundays at Central Park – and Marantelli is delighted with the entry for the first major open-race competition since lockdown restrictions were eased.
“It’s a wide-open Silver Salver and we have to say well done to Central Park and its racing office team for accommodating trials of non-attached trainers in difficult circumstances. It’s meant for a top-class field of sprinters and we’re looking forward to it.”
The Kent Silver Salver had originally been scheduled for March but lockdown restrictions forced the track to find a suitable alternative date and Central Park racing manager Dan Homewood is delighted with the response to the famous sprint.
“I think the overall quality is much better than we might have expected in March, which I supposed is understandable given the break trainers and greyhounds have had – and the fact it’s a standalone sprint competition.
“It’s great to be staging some of the first open races in the GBGB Calendar and we’ve got an excellent card here on Sunday with top-quality races across the board. We’ll be hoping to match that quality across the next two Sundays of the Colossus Bets Silver Salver and onwards for the build up to the RPGTV Champion Hurdle.”
