Ripon betting tips: Fishable one step ahead of handicapper

Steven Dowler came unbelievably close to landing a huge win at Glorious Goodwood, landing 5/6 in the Place 6 three days in a row. He’s determined to go one better in the £5,000+ Rollover Place 6 at Ripon on Thursday. So check out his Ripon betting tips and join his Syndicate.

12.45 – Novice Stakes – Class 5

Jedd O’Keeffe has an exceptional strike-rate at this track and his sole runner on the card SANDHOE looks to have been located an ideal opportunity to follow up her impressive C&D success 29 days ago. She showed drastic improvement from her first couple of starts to beat two subsequent winners that day and she can go in again here. Meanwhile, MAY SHE SHINE can be expected to take a step-forward from her debut fourth at Haydock, which has worked out feasibly well, and she shouldn’t be ruled out for place purposes. Mark Johnston’s PERFECT TIMES won nicely on her debut at Kempton and if she translates that form to the turf then she can’t be discounted.

Selections: SANDHOE, MAY SHE SHINE, PERFECT TIMES

13.15 – Handicap – 6f

This looks competitive, for which case plenty make obvious appeal while remaining on lenient-looking marks.

GUNMETAL could never get involved last time out when well-supported in the market in a higher-grade race, but he’s on a good mark that he is definitely more than capable of exploiting given he’s a previous C&D winner off an 8lb higher mark in a class 2 event. Today’s race is class 3, while he has Ben Curtis for assistance again, so he must have strong credentials of taking top honours.

ROUNDHAY PARK has the beating of a few of these on previous meetings, and capitalised on a reduced mark when last seen. His course form is strong, along with the fact that he’s placed and won previous races off much higher marks in the past. He gets plenty of weight from horses he has beaten previously, therefore, he makes plenty of appeal in a wide-open event.

STAXTON hasn’t been at his best since the turn of 2020, but he’s very well-handicapped based on past exploits and his C&D form is exceptional reading 2 (100), 3 (101) and 5 (99) all in fields of 11 runners or more. He will run in today’s race off a mark of 84, which can also be recognised as a drop down in class compared to his last three outings at the track.

Selections: GUNMETAL, ROUNDHAY PARK, STAXTON

13.45 – Handicap – Class 6

I think this is a good race for its grade, therefore, I’m happy to play a quadruple of selections on our ticket.

ROBOT BOY shouldn’t be discounted at double-figure odds. He’s invariably been competing in higher graded races throughout his career, and the last time he competed in a class 6 event it resulted with success off a 6lb higher mark. With that being said, he’s an each-way player and is thus included in my Ripon betting tips.

The Midgley team runs two in the race and both GAMESOME and VAN GERWEN can also be expected to be in the thick of the action given both have won races in the past off higher marks, and have been running well enough recently, especially the former who won 19 days ago to suggest they be will thereabouts again.

Meanwhile, HENLEY takes a drop down in class having failed to get involved when well-supported for a much stronger race when last seen. He remains on a mark that is well within his compass of exceeding if everything falls right for him.

Selections: ROBOT BOY,  GAMESOME, HENLEY, VAN GERWEN

14.20 – Nursery – Class 5

This won’t take a lot of winning and INFANT HERCULES could be the answer to the race having run well in defeat on all three outings thus far for connections. He placed on his first couple of starts before finishing fourth at Catterick. The step up to a mile should suit and he’s got a cracking each-way chance.

David O’Meara boasts a fine record at this track and his runner LOCKET should take some stopping. She’s a filly who has shown promise on all three races thus far and with the step up in trip likely to bring about further improvement, she could easily take the spoils.

Selections: INFANT HERCULES, LOCKET

14.50 – Handicap – 2m

We are intrigued to a highly-competitive stayers race, and preference is for REPETITIO representing the Nigel Hawke team. He developed into a useful hurdler last season, placing in a grade two at Cheltenham, before winning a handicap at Cheltenham and not disgracing himself at the festival. The four-year-old won two races ago over 2-miles on the flat and was unfortunate to bump into a well-regarded sort at Haydock in a class 4 event last time out. He’s up 3lb here, but the better ground will suit and he’s been given an excellent chance by the handicapper to resume winning ways.

RED TORNADO is another one who mixes races between the flat and over the obstacles and is probably the best of these over timber according to official ratings. However, the 8-year-old went close to winning on the flat two starts ago off a mark of 70 when beaten a nose and he’s only 1lb higher today. A repeat performance might well suffice here with stamina assured and conditions to his liking.

Selections: REPETITIO, RED TORNADO

15.20 – Handicap – 1m1f

A few of these come into the race with encouraging profiles but one who looks to be a step ahead of the handicapper is FISHABLE who was very impressive when winning over C&D a couple of weeks ago. The step up in trip appeared to work the oracle for him that day having been allowed to ease down in the final half a furlong to score by three lengths. The way he won that day suggested he’s a horse capable of taking higher rank and he has every chance of following up despite a 7lb rise in the handicap..

Of the rest, RITCHIE VALENS is consistent and Jack Mitchell takes the ride who operates at a fair strike-rate at this track. Therefore, his mount is entitled the utmost respect in this tricky contest and is included.

Selections: FISHABLE, RITCHIE VALENS
