Players to score 5 goals in a Premier League game

For most players, the thought of just scoring a hat trick is an achievement in itself. Especially if they were to do it at the highest level such as in the Premier League. Yet a few players have gone further than the three goals in a game. Indeed, some have passed the prestigious four-goal mark. That’s because there is an elite club of several strikers that have scored 5 times in one Premier League game. There are 5 players who have achieved this feat – each having left their mark on the scene in more than just their one-game magic implies. Let’s take a look at every striker who has scored 5 goals in one game.

Andy Cole – 4/3/1995 vs Ipswich Town

Manchester United’s 9-0 win against Ipswich Town on the 4th March 1995 was historic for many reasons. The mammoth score line remains one of the biggest winning margins in Premier League history and the star of the day was very much Andy Cole. Having only moved to Old Trafford several months beforehand, Cole was in red hot form as they took on relegation-favourites Ipswich. The Englishman put United 2-0 with a close range finish and then bagged a second with a tap in shortly afterwards. After securing his hat-trick with the faintest of touches, Cole was ready to score more. He scored yet another rebound tap in to make it 7-0 in the 73rd minute. And then completed his haul nodding in the ninth from a corner in the 87th minute. It was a result that galvanized United to finish 2nd in the title race that season and undermined Cole as a talismanic striker that was in the form of his life.

Alan Shearer – 19/9/99 vs Sheffield Wednesday

For Newcastle fans, the 19th September 1999 was a day where iconic heroes cemented their enduring legacy at the club. With legendary manager Bobby Robson now managing the club, it was local hero and goal scoring legend Alan Shearer that made this a debut to remember for Robson. Shearer’s first was a cute flick from a Nobby Solano cross to make it 2-0. A penalty from Shearer made it 3-0 shortly afterwards before he finished off a sweeping move to bag a hat-trick before half time. It would be towards the end of the game where Shearer grabbed two more. He capitalised on some poor defending to make it 7-0 before converting a second penalty to finish off the goal glut. It was a legendary performance that underlined everything about why Shearer is the most successful goal scorer in Premier League history.

Jermain Defoe – 22/11/2009 vs Wigan

Jermain Defoe is one of the Premier League’s greatest players to not win the league title and he further underlined his credentials for this in Tottenham’s famous 9-1 win against Wigan. Defoe’s performance in the second half of the clash on 22nd November 2009 was immense. After Spurs led 1-0 at half-time, Defoe volleyed home to make it 2-0 on 51 minutes. After that, the England international was ruthless. He quickly pounced to make it 3-0 after some poor defending from Wigan at the back before securing the hat-trick just a few seconds later finishing off an Aaron Lennon cross. Defoe’s hat-trick took just 7 minutes and is the third fastest in Premier League history. Defoe nabbed two more before full-time to grab five and showcase why he is one of the best strikers of the 2000s.

Dimitar Berbatov – 27/11/2010 vs Blackburn Rovers

On his day, Dimitar Berbatov was a striker that could tear any side on the planet to pieces. And it was Blackburn Rovers who learnt this the hard way when they lost 7-1 to Manchester United on the 27th November 2010. The Bulgarian showed all his predatory instincts early on making it 1-0 with a harp finish from inside the box. He would then seize on a defensive lapse by Rovers to grab his second and sealed the hat-trick with a trademark powerful finish to make it 4-0. However, Berbatov still had time to grab more as he tucked away a rebound to grab his fourth. And a finish from a narrow angle made it five for Berbatov as well as 7 for United. By grabbing five, Berbatov became the first foreign player to score 5 goals in English top flight history and secure his own unique spot in Premier League history.

Sergio Aguero – 3/10/2015 vs Newcastle United

There are few strikers that were as lively in the box as Sergio Aguero and his five goal haul against Newcastle in 2015 showed these aspects quite superbly. The Man City striker would shock everyone by netting 5 in just 20 minutes. The first drew City level when the Argentinian nodded home just before half-time. In the second half, Aguero came out all guns blazing with his second coming via a wicked deflection. There were no questions about his hat-trick goal as he scored after an excellent solo run. He then lashed home a fourth from the edge of the area before converting a Kevin De Bruyne cross to grab his fifth of the match. It was a performance like this that showcased why Aguero is a Man City legend and also why he is the highest scoring foreign player in the history of English football.
