5 contenders to be the 2021 NFL MVP
Although there is plenty of time for the picture to change, there are already a few names standing out from the crowd in the race to become the 2021 NFL MVP. Here we look at the top 5 contenders to add their name to the list of NFL MVP winners at the midway stage of the season.
5 contenders to be the 2021 NFL MVP
5. Dak Prescott
Kicking off our list of 2021 NFL MVP contenders is Dak Prescott. If we’re honest, he’d probably have missed out on the top five had Derrick Henry not suffered a season ending foot injury but sadly it did happen. Once Henry was out of the running, Prescott was a no brainer to feature.
Ironically last year it was Prescott who suffered a devastating injury but now he’s back and carrying the Dallas Cowboys. We know he hasn’t been perfect but has tossed at least three touchdowns in all but two of their games. His comeback this year is quite remarkable and with Dallas in good shape in their division, he’s got a real chance of pushing for the award.
4. Lamar Jackson
It is no secret that Lamar Jackson is one of the most electric players in the league – or at least that he is capable of being that. So far this season, he is delivering to that hype. He is single-handedly dragging his Baltimore Ravens team forward and already this season there have been a number of games where his team have been looking down the barrel before he has brought them back from the brink of defeat.
This match-saving form is supported by the fact that Jackson leads the league in fourth quarter comebacks. He’s always been explosive in his run game and now he’s combining it with a clear end product that is impacting his team. He’s already had award to his name, having been named the NFL MVP 2019, and at this rate he’ll definitely be in the mix for a second.
3. Matthew Stafford
Matt Stafford, whose wife has just been involved in ‘pretzel-gate’, might have had a bit of a lacklustre showing as the Rams lost to the Tennessee Titans last week but, regardless, he is still on pace for the best season of his career. The veteran signal caller is leading the NFL in quarterback rating heading into this week and drastically just changed the outlook of the Los Angeles Rams season when he joined the team.
Where the 2021 MVP award is concerned, people will look at who has made a big impact. What Stafford has done for the Rams, combined with the fact that they’ve lost just two games to date, means he’ll be there or thereabouts as the season moves towards the close.
2. Tom Brady
Tom Brady is utterly ridiculous. He just doesn’t stop playing. Despite being 44-years-old, Brady is still in the top three for the 2021 NFL MVP award. The legendary quarterback has completed 67.3% of his passes and is in charge of a top ranked scoring offense.
You could argue that Brady would have been topping this list but for his out of character, three turnover performance against the New Orleans Saints. Regardless, he leads the league with 25 touchdowns and is throwing for 331.3 yards per game. Can he write another chapter in his phenomenal history book? We would not rule it out.
1. Kyler Murray
We have just mentioned four players who are all having fantastic seasons but it would be wrong not to have Kyler Murray sitting in top spot. He is unquestionably the front runner for the 2021 NFL MVP award at the moment.
Even accounting for his high standards, Murray has had a fantastic season to date and despite missing the recent game against the San Francisco 49ers, he is still well ahead of the chasing pack. The team is 8-2 on the season and has a near 73% completion rate with a ridiculously high 122.1 passer rating when the Cardinals hit third down. He is in the top five in passing yards per game and leads what is arguably the most explosive offense in the NFL with loads of playmakers at seemingly every single position. Murray is the man to beat.
