NBA Draft 2020 prospects | Top 5

The 2020 NBA draft takes place on Wednesday and with some talented prospects up for grabs this year, the predictions are in overdrive. Having already looked at the best and worst NBA draft picks of all time, we decided to take a look at the top NBA draft prospects for 2020.

Before we get into the names, though, it’s worth pointing out that usually there is a nailed on number one pick. This year, that spot is wide open, which should make for an extra exciting top order.

Who are the top 5 NBA draft prospects 2020?

5. Onyeka Okongw

Okongwu came through the same High School as the Ball brothers where he was named California’s Mr Basketball two years running. His performances have continued since joining USC and he made the first team All-Pac-12. The Power Forward registered a decent shooting percentage at 61.6% during his only college season whilst taking an average of 8.6 rebounds per game, owing to his strong leap. Despite racking up over 450 points throughout the campaign, Okongwu’s strengths are on the defensive phase of the game with his ability to sink three pointers an area for development. Even so, we think he could sneak into the top five picks.

4. Anthony Edwards

Edwards comes into the draft with incredibly high stock and is undoubtedly one of the biggest NBA draft prospects for the 2020 season. He has recently been named SEC Freshman of the Year after top scoring for the Georgia Bulldogs. It’s the same award that Tyler Herro – a fellow Shooting Guard – won last year. He went at number 13 in 2019 and maintained his college stats for Miami Heat. If Edwards could handle the step up in a similar manner then someone will have a potential star on their hands as 1.3 steals and 19.1 points per game are more than respectable numbers. The other perk to Edwards’ game is his ability to bring others into play, which is backed up by his 2.8 assists. That’s something that is unusual for players of his mould.

3. LaMelo Ball

LaMelo’s brother, Lonzo, went as the number two pick in 2017 and now eyes have turned to the younger of the duo with many experts expecting him to be the number one overall. He possesses excellent handling skills with the ability to pass through opposition without too many concerns. His footwork is continuing to develop too. He’s been plying his trade in the NBL with the Illawarra Hawks where he’s led the team on rebounds and assists. If he can add some bulk to his 6 ft 7 frame then his potential is sky high. We still think number one might be a tad keen for Ball though.

2. James Wiseman

Wiseman will definitely make his move into the NBA. The question is just when in the draft his name is called. The 7 foot tall center stood out for Memphis as he averaged 10.3 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 19.7 points. The trouble is, there were complications with the NCAA and he only played three games. It makes him a largely unknown quantity. What cannot be doubted is his physical attributes; he’s got a huge leap, can transition into offense rapidly and, somewhat surprisingly, has pretty tidy footwork too.

1. Tyrese Haliburton

We’ve already touched on Lonzo Ball. Well, if anyone plays a similar game to him in this draft it’s actually Haliburton – not his brother. The point guard has the knack of seeing things other players simply don’t but, unlike Lonzo, he comes with a better mentality, which should allow for a smoother transition into the big time. That said, Haliburton is only coming into the draft off the back of one really standout season at Iowa State. His Freshman year was by no means a disaster but he really upped his game last year. 6.5 assists, 5.9 rebounds and 15.2 points per game was a considerable increase on the prior campaign. With the right coaching, that upward trajectory could continue and Haliburton will develop into a real boss of the court. He’s a likely first pick and comes top of our list of the NBA draft prospects for 2020.
