Who has the most assists in Premier League history?

The art of the playmaker. Not quite as revered as the lone striker or record goalscorer, but a position which takes just as much skill and deserves all the same praise. Calmness under pressure, spatial awareness and a keen eye only begin to scratch the surface of what’s needed to make it at the highest level. Today we take a look at the five players with the most assists in Premier League history.

Who has the most Premier League assists in history?

5th. Dennis Bergkamp (94)

A true match-day maestro, Bergkamp is one of those players whose stats don’t quite do him justice. Coming in fifth on the most Premier League assists list with 94, the Dutchman drifted between forward positions, a style of play he picked up from his early years with Ajax.

His prolific spell under Wenger brought about infamous partnerships with the likes of Henry, Overmars, Anelka and Ljungberg; Composure, ability and vision by the boatload. His eleven-year run from ‘95 – ‘06 helped the Gunners to 3 Premier League title wins and 4 FA Cups.

For such an instrumental part of Arsenal’s glory years, his last outing in 2006 was one of heartache, the Champions League final between Arsenal vs. Barcelona. Despite an early header from Campbell, two late Eto and Belletti goals brought an abrupt end to the North London celebrations. Although not quite in our top five, it only just falls short of the list.

4th. Frank Lampard (102)

Frank Lampard has been in the headlines again recently, but for all the wrong reasons. His latest position as Chelsea manager resulted in a swift exit, though we can’t say it came as too much of a surprise.

His appointment was largely based on his reputation as one of Chelsea’s, and the Premier Leagues, greatest ever midfielders, as well as a recent playoff run with Derby Country. With 102 assists in his career, he’s also the Blue’s leading scorer with 211 goals across all competitions.

Routinely compared with his Liverpool counterpart, Steven Gerrard, Lampard outdid his rival in terms of statistics but does have 100 more games to his name. The epitome of a tactically-minded, box-to-box midfielder.

3rd. Wayne Rooney (103)

Being the Premier League’s second all-time top goalscorer also plays favorably to your assist tally. At least if you’re Wayne Rooney.

Bursting onto the scene at Everton at just 16 years of age, he was making highlight-reel footage from day one, with one of the best debut goals you could ask for. A curling 30-yard strike to end Arsenal’s 30-game unbeaten streak, making him the league’s youngest ever goalscorer. “Remember the name, Wayne Rooney!”

Two years later he made the monumental move to Manchester United for around £25 million, ultimately making history as one of the league’s greatest ever forwards. 5 league titles, 1 Champions League, United’s top striker of all time and the third most assists in Premier League history with 103.

2nd. Cesc Fàbregas (111)

Second on our list of most assists in the Premier League is Cesc Fàbregas with a huge 111, placing him firmly among the best Premier League midfielders ever. A star-studded lineup of former clubs, Fabregas sharpened his skills alongside some of the biggest names in football.

He first stepped up to the spotlight in 2005 after claiming Arsenal’s number 4 shirt, following Patrick Viera’s move to Juventus. A pinnacle playmaker with an exceptional eye for a pass, he progressed on to become captain of the Gunners from 2008 onwards. A trophy-less spell in London eventually culminated in a move back to his boyhood club of Barcelona.

A fruitful three years in Spain was later met with an even more eventful transfer to Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2014. That six-year Barcelona-Chelsea spell alone was enough to secure his place in the history books: 1 La Liga title, 1 Copa Del Ray, 2 Premier League Titles, 1 FA Cup (and one for Arsenal back in ‘05), 1 League Cup and a World Cup as well.

1st. Ryan Giggs (162)

Was there ever any doubt of who has the most assists in Premier League history? Ex-United star-midfielder Ryan Giggs tops the list with 162.

His accolades and achievements as a one-club player are hard match. Nimble, versatile and disciplined, he was also never sent off in his entire club career – though tempers did flare and a red was shown in an international qualifier against Norway back in 2010.

Only just beaten out by Gareth Barry, Giggs also has the second-most appearances in top-flight English football with 632. One of Fergie’s key men, his trophy cabinet must be looking pretty full at this point with 13 Premier League medals, 4 FA Cups, 3 League Cups and many, many more.
