A small but interesting opener and the marginal vote goes to MY MATE AJ.

He’s up against some fascinating newcomers but shaped extremely well when third on debut at Southwell and could put that experience to good use.

His jockey, Ben Jones, is undoubtedly at the top of his game, too, which is a bonus.

Sticking with Ben Jones and Ben Pauling, they could have a quick-fire double as WONDERING WHY makes plenty of appeal.

This bumper winner has placed on both starts in this sphere and pushed a smart horse close at Huntingdon last month. With more to come, he’s fancied to go one place better.

Tips: WONDERING WHY

In the Surrey National, I really like SURREY QUEST. He’s finished down the field on all three starts over hurdles this season but I reckon they were used as confidence booster outings for a return to chasing.

He’s 2lb lower than when a nose-second in the 2024 Scottish National and ran well to place in two other marathon events off higher marks afterwards. If the recent wind surgery has had a positive impact then I think this nine-year-old has major claims, especially with a troubled-free passage.

Tips: SURREY QUEST

The Gary and Josh Moore-trained CASA LOUPI still remains well handicapped on his best form and was far too good for his rivals in a seller last time out. He doesn’t have many miles on the clock for his age and could take some beating with his rider offsetting a valuable 10lb.

Tips: CASA LOUPI

BOLLIN THOU has yet to taste defeat under the services of Sean Bowen and was a very good winner at Hereford seven days ago. The drop back in trip shouldn’t be an issue and there’s every indication that he’s still firmly well ahead of the assessor. He can justify favouritism by completing the hat trick.

Tips: BOLLIN THOU

FELTON BELLEVUE returned to form to some extent when third at Windsor last time out and is back down to a really handy mark, with his last win coming over C&D off a mark of 93. He’s 5lb lower in this race and has a low weight, too. The 11-year-old should be able to make an impact given how well treated he is.

Tips: FELTON BELLEVUE
