Four times Scotland won at Wembley

England and Scotland will face-off at Wembley on Friday evening in a must-see clash in Group D of Euro 2020. Following their opening match defeat to the Czech Republic, Steve Clarke’s Scotland side travel to London looking to pull off a shock and bag themselves vital three points, but history is against them. To give the Tartan Army some hope, we’ve taken a look back at four times Scotland has seen off the Auld Enemy at Wembley.

Four times Scotland won at Wembley

England 0-1 Scotland (1999)

The last time Scotland tasted success over England was in this Euro 2000 qualifying play-off in 1999. England had won 2-0 at Hampden four days previously thanks to a double from Paul Scholes, meaning Scotland had to not only win at Wembley but also overhaul a two-goal advantage.

The Scots put in a stunning performance, recording a win and preventing England from having a single shot on target but eventually just came up short.

Don Hutchinson gave Craig Brown’s side the lead in the 39th minute and had David Seaman not pulled off a stunning point-blank save from Christian Dailly the tie would have gone to extra-time. Alas for the Tartan Army, it ended 2-1 on aggregate and England manager Kevin Keegan was quoted as saying that his side had been “the luckiest team in the world.”

England 1-2 Scotland (1977)

This clash is best remembered for the complete mayhem that followed the final whistle as thousands of Scotland fans hauled down goalposts and dug up the Wembley turf as souvenirs. Before that though, Scotland had put in a dominant display to record their first win at Wembley in a decade.

Goals from Kenny Dalgleish and Gordon McQueen were enough to see Scotland home with Mick Channon scoring a late consolation penalty for England.

The Wembley result may have been a poisoned chalice for Scotland though, adding to the hype that Ally McLeod and his squad would be a force to be reckoned with at their ill-fated trip to the World Cup in Argentina in 1978.

England 2-3 Scotland (1967)

Scotland were crowned ‘unofficial champions of the world’ after defeating Alf Ramsey’s England 3-2 at the ground where the summer before their hosts had lifted the World Cup.

Scotland fielded four of Celtic’s European Cup-winning side alongside Denis Law and Rangers’ Jim Baxter who, at one stage, tormented the English by playing keepie-uppie.

Denis Law, Bobby Lennox, and Jim McCalliog scored the goals for Scotland with Jack Charlton and Geoff Hurst replying for the English. The Wembley victory for Scotland condemned England to their first defeat in 20 matches and sent shockwaves around the footballing world.

England 1-5 Scotland (1928)

Arguably Scotland’s greatest ever win at Wembley happened almost 100 years ago with the ‘Wembley Wizards’ demolishing the Auld Enemy 5-1.

On a rain-sodden pitch Alex Jackson scored a hat-trick for Scotland, to date the only Scotsman to do so at Wembley, with Alex James also adding a double to the scoresheet.

As Scotland were applauded off the pitch by both sets of supporters, James told a waiting reporter “we could have had ten.”
