QUAY ITEM displayed plenty of promise when third at Doncaster on NH debut and should have a lot more to come. The team hasn’t had much luck this season but hopefully this youngster can come good at the second time of asking under Nico.

13.50 Legendary Jimmy James 90th Birthday Novices’ Hurdle

This can go the way of EDDIE THE EAGLE, who has finished second on two of his three starts, including on hurdles debut last time out. He will be carrying 7lb less than his two market rivals and that could prove crucial in the final outcome, so he’s selected to go close.

14.20 Southern Cranes Handicap Chase

SUPERSTYLIN absolutely bolted up at Fontwell on Boxing Day and must have every chance of going in again if in the same form. He is up to a career high mark of 99 but I see no reason why he cannot go close. SEA THRIFT is the main danger getting so much weight from the favourite.

14.50 Southern Cranes Handicap Hurdle

IKE SPORT is an in and out character but is more than capable at this level and should be able to make an impact with his sights lowered. The other one to consider is GOOD TO BE ALIVE, who ran well behind a subsequent winner last time out and has more to come, while the well treated PATRIOTIK could get involved.

15.20 Kalm Club Mares’ Handicap Hurdle

GETAWAY THEATRE has placed on both of her starts this season and this course should play to her strengths. I wouldn’t rule out a positive showing from TANKARDSTOWN DIVA though, who should be able to pose a threat if that latest fall hasn’t knocked her confidence.

15.50 Tysers Insurance Brokers Handicap Chase

GEORGES SAINT has his favoured ground and is another on the card to have made a good start to the season with two placed efforts. He’s 3lb lower than when scoring by 12 lengths when last successful in December of 2023, so his long winless drought is surely going to come to an end. This really is his for the taking with so much up his street. I make him the best bet on the card.
