This looks like a good race and I’ll go with hurdle debutant WANDERING EGO, who improved run-by-run last season and concluded his three outings with a wide-margin victory at Wetherby in March. He is fancied to get the better of Irish raider Eternal Echo.

SUMMERGROUNDS recorded back-to-back during the spring and subsequently came very close to scoring over C&D when a half-length second. The nine-year-old is only 3lb higher so he should be able to remain competitive having placed in three of his four course starts.

KARTON PLEIN left his hurdling debut well and truly behind when coming good at Southwell back in February. He is now switched to handicap company after seven months off and should have plenty more to come. An opening mark of 110 looks exploitable.

STATUARIO loves it around here, with his course record reading 11411521 and is only a pound higher when winning here two starts ago, albeit he was assisted by one horse that unseated the rider when going well. This is a deeper event, but he’s much respected. As an alternative, MARS HARPER must be feared. He’s a good horse on his day and is by no means out of this event.

PESCATORIUS lacked conviction at some of his fences when last seen at Fontwell, but stayed on strongly to finish a close-up third. With the blinkers applied for the first time, a better round of jumping should see Olly Murphy’s charge bang in contention under Sean Bowen.

STILETTO produced a dominant performance when scoring by nine lengths at Worcester under the champion jockey nine days ago, and although this may seem tougher, the top-weight remains the one to beat under the penalty.
