Who has won the most Manager of the Month awards?

Nothing brings success to a club more than a figurehead who knows how to get the best from their players. It doesn’t matter how they set the team up or which players are out on the pitch, the best managers always know how to get the right results when they matter. In the Premier League, those who showcase their skills time and time again get to enjoy the success of being crowned Manager of the Month. In the past three decades, many of the world’s finest managers have been given this accolade often on multiple occasions. But who has won the most Manager of the Month awards outright?

  1. Sir Bobby Robson – 6 times

Loved by football fans from Ipswich to Newcastle to Barcelona, Sir Bobby Robson proved he had one of the best minds in the game during his career. Whilst he may be best known for his 1978 UEFA Cup win with Ipswich Town, Bobby’s last role as manager of Newcastle United made him a popular figure on Tyneside. Robson was able to get the best out of icons like Shay Given and Alan Shearer whilst integrating more modern players such as Lauren Robert and Nobby Solano to form a side often challenging for European places. His 5-year spell earnt him 6 Premier League Manager of the Month awards and are proof that Sir Bobby’s legacy is felt throughout the footballing world to this day.

  1. Sam Allardyce – 6 times

Known for his teams playing a tough, physical style that shook even the biggest teams to the core, Big Sam always found a way to reach his goals. Whether it was taking Bolton Wanderers to new heights or helping West Ham re-establish themselves as Premier League regulars, fans know what they are getting with Allardyce at the helm. His run with Bolton is still what he is best remembered guiding The Trotters to a League Cup final as well as several runs in Europe and a period where he would end up winning 4 out of his 6 MotM awards, the joint ninth most in history.

  1. Pep Guardiola – 7 times

It might seem strange to see one of the world’s best managers this far down the list but this is still a mighty achievement for Pep who has only been in England for 5 seasons. The Spaniard has guided Manchester City to two Premier League titles and ensured that the big-spending City are always at the forefront of the competition. Pep has blended his signature style with the rugged demands of the English game landing him 7 Manager of the Month awards including 4 consecutive wins from September-December 2017. Not bad indeed!

  1. Rafael Benitez – 7 times

There are very few places where Rafa Benitez has failed to make an impact in the world of football and the Spaniard is very well known to in the north of England. Whether it was making miracles on Merseyside or keeping The Toon Army singing in full voice, Benitez has been the driving force behind it. Benitez has been considered one of the reasons why Liverpool became a resurgent force in the league during the early 2000s where he earnt the majority of his Manager of the Month awards but his last two came when he helped a struggling Newcastle side fight for survival winning the respect of footballing fans around the country.

  1. Harry Redknapp – 8 times

Whether you love him or hate him, there is no denying that Harry Redknapp has been one of the most successful English managers in the modern game. His time with both Portsmouth and Tottenham saw Redknapp guide his team to momentous achievements such as Pompey’s FA Cup win in 2008 or helping Spurs finally overcome their derby hoodoo against Arsenal in the league. These performances came from a smash mouth style that allowed his sides to enjoy victories against much bigger opposition. Thanks to those successes, Redknapp has been given Manager of the Month awards on no less than 8 occasions making him the most successful English manager on this list.

  1. Martin O’Neill – 8 times

So often the nearly man in football, Martin O’Neill’s calm and cool manner is deceiving to the one fans see during the game. One of the most refined brains in football, O’Neill has been able to get his teams playing a slick style whilst always remaining hard to break down. Strong spells with Leicester, Aston Villa and Sunderland resulted in no trophies but he has always managed to get his teams punching well above their weight. Thanks to this, he has been awarded no less than 8 Manager of the Month trophies during his various spells in the Premier League making him a manager that is still highly thought of by many in the game today.

  1. Jurgen Klopp – 8 times

Perhaps the most loved German in Britain today, Jurgen Klopp is fast becoming a cult figure down in Merseyside. Klopp has finally been the person to bring the glory days back to Anfield and has turned Liverpool into one of the most fearsome sides on the planet. Not afraid to face the truth or adhere to traditional uniform either, the German finally helped Liverpool win their first Premier League trophy in 2020 for the first time in over 30 years. It’s not surprising to see that Klopp has 8 MotM awards to his name but that figure will surely rise into double figures before he departs Anfield.

  1. David Moyes – 10 times

Whilst David Moyes may have endured some tumultuous times in the 2010’s, it is hard to forget just how good the Scotsman was at Goodison Park with Everton. Working with miniscule budgets compared to their rivals, Moyes always ensured Everton were a tough nut to crack and that The Toffees would be guaranteed to be sniffing around the European spots. His time at Old Trafford may have been severely underwhelming but Moyes has finally regained some credibility helping West Ham become a strong mid-table side. Whilst all of Moyes’ awards came during his time with Everton, it’s not out of the question to think that the Scot can still prove to be a wily opponent to overcome in the near future.

  1. Arsene Wenger – 15 times

If you think of one manager to link with The Gunners, it would be the club’s almost namesake Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman was a relative unknown when he moved to London in 1996 but his progressive style changed the game we know today. During the prime run of his tenure at the turn of the century, Wenger and Arsenal were literally unstoppable as they became the only side to go through a season undefeated as they won the 2003/04 title. Whilst that stunning season remains their last league victory, Wenger always kept Arsenal in the top 4 during his time at the club which heralded 15 Manager of the Month awards and 3 Premier League titles.

  1. Sir Alex Ferguson – 27 times

If one manager has defined the Premier League since its inception, it would be Sir Alex Ferguson. The uncompromising Scot proved himself to be one of the greatest minds in the game’s history during his staggering 27 year run at Old Trafford. He helped nurture the class of ’92 into one of the best teams in footballing history and had a pivotal role in helping the likes of David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo become global megastars. With 13 League titles and 27 Manager of the Month trophies, it’s not hard to understand why Sir Alex is regarded not only as one of the greatest British managers ever, but arguably the best manager of all time overall.
