Michael van Gerwen: “Every player knows that I am the best”

Mighty Michael van Gerwen has come out all guns blazing after his toughest-ever patch in the PDC  Premier League. The dominant Dutchman lost three matches in six days to Glen Durrant, Gary Anderson and Gerwyn Price, almost ending his hopes of finishing top of the league for a sixth successive year.

It’s a massive slump in form for Michael van Gerwen, the World No.1, but he came back with fighting talk after beating Michael Smith on Sunday night.

He said: “I’m in a difficult phase at the moment but I showed everyone what I’m capable of again. I also showed how to do it when you really have to. It’s a big compliment for myself.”

“I’m not worried but you need to make sure that you battle back and give 100 per cent. As long as I make sure of that then I will be top of the table of the world really soon again.”

“You still have to do it, you still have to believe in yourself and invest in yourself. Of course not everything always goes really easy. Look to all the other players what they do during the year, they have a bad period or bad patch. It’s how you react to it and how you deal with it. I think I deal with it quite well.”

“What am I doing to myself? I’m giving myself a lot of pain for nothing. I know what I’m capable of, I know what my capacity is. I know I’ve got a lot of talent. But you still have to use it time after time.”

“The pressure is always on my shoulders. I know my shoulders are big but you still have to do it.

“I need a two day break like everyone else. Six days in a row on the highest level, intense games, a lot of pressure I think it’s really important to have two days off.”

The Premier League resumes after a 48 hour break on Wednesday night with Michael van Gerwen taking on Peter Wright in a repeat of the 2020 World Championship final.

MVG added: “Confidence is so important and I have to be happy with how I played in this game. There is always pressure on my shoulders, especially when I lose but now after this win I can show everyone that I am playing well again.”

“Every player in this building knows I am the best darts player and I don’t need to show them that but sometimes in life you have to come through bad stages and that is what makes you the best.”

“I of course want to the top of the table but I need to win my games and hope some good players can beat Glen but the most important thing for me is to make the play-offs.”
