Jadon Sancho would be a perfect fit for Liverpool

Jadon Sancho has been chased by Manchester United for so long that most can’t imagine the winger moving anywhere else when he finally decides to leave Borussia Dortmund, as is inevitable. With another window in sight, speculation is starting to swirl once more and the majority of it points to Old Trafford.

United aren’t the only Premier League club who could use Sancho, though. If the 21-year-old is available this summer, as is reportedly the case with Dortmund lowering their asking price, Liverpool should be among those making their sales pitch, as Jadon Sancho would be just as useful at Anfield as at Old Trafford.

Injuries have undoubtedly hindered Liverpool this season, to the point where they might not finish in the top four. The Reds have missed Virgil van Dijk in particular, with the Dutchman sidelined for the majority of the 2020/21 campaign. However, Liverpool cannot count on van Dijk’s return to fix all their problems. There must be an evolution in the squad, starting in the next transfer window.

The signing of Jadon Sancho this summer would be one of those evolutions for Liverpool. Capable of playing on the left and right, the England international would be a good fit for Liverpool’s fast and furious style of play. After all, the way Borussia Dortmund play isn’t too dissimilar to what Liverpool fans have grown accustomed to under Klopp.

Sancho is widely perceived to have underwhelmed this season but he has still contributed 16 goals and 12 assists for the Black and Yellows, underlining just how productive he is in the final third. Imagine just how many more he would score and assist if dropped into Liverpool’s system and starting lineup, with so many world class teammates around him.

Liverpool’s attack has been guilty of being wasteful at times this season. Sancho’s addition would help address this and would demonstrate a willingness from Klopp and the club’s decision-makers to keep moving forward. Liverpool can’t catch Manchester City by standing still. They must be ambitious to claw their way back to the top of the English and European game.

There would be, however, obstacles for Liverpool to clear to beat Manchester United to Jadon Sancho. Anfield won’t be as attractive if the Champions League anthem won’t be played there this season, especially with United already sure of their place in the competition. Klopp would need to persuade that missing out on Champions League qualification won’t happen again.

What’s more, Liverpool might not be able to afford Jadon Sancho without selling at least one key figure this summer. Dortmund have reportedly lowered their asking price for the 21-year-old to €90m having demanded over €120m for him last summer, but that would still require some funds to be raised at Anfield.

To sign Sancho, Klopp would likely have to make the decision to offload either Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah. The former would surely be the pick, especially given their touchline altercation this week, but Mane’s form has dipped so dramatically this season that finding a buyer might be tricky. Salah would command the larger transfer fee, but the Egyptian is an icon on Merseyside. The decision to let him leave would be unpopular.

Nonetheless, the sight of Jadon Sancho replacing a Liverpool legend would be symbolic. Klopp built the greatest team the Merseyside club had seen in a generation, but is now charged with rebuilding it. Just as the Reds were bold in making moves for the likes of Alisson Becker and van Dijk, they must be bold in identifying who will lead them back to the top. And ensure they don’t sign for a rival instead.
