How many goals has Ronaldo scored?

Ronaldo vs. Messi, the eternal debate surrounding which of the global football icons isn’t just the best player on the planet but the greatest of all time. Ronaldo is certainly among the richest of all time, with how now confirmed as one of the highest paid athletes in history. In March we took a look at Messi’s goal stats but what about his Portuguese rival? How many goals has Ronaldo scored?

 

Where does Ronaldo play?

 

Tending to operate on the left wing, or on the left side of a front three, for most of his career, Cristiano Ronaldo plays a similar role to that of Messi who occupies the same role on the right hand side. As such it’s a fair comparison to make between the two stars as opposed to the world’s leading global strikers in recent years, like Sergio Aguero, Robert Lewandowski and Harry Kane.

Beginning his career in his native Portugal for Sporting Lisbon, Ronaldo made his Sporting debut at the age of 16. He went on to score five goals and contribute three assists in 31 appearances for the club at a rate of one goal every 278 minutes.

Although an impressive feat for a 16-year-old, there wasn’t yet an indication that Cristiano Ronaldo would go on to achieve the kind of ridiculous scoring feats that he has. However, that changed in the summer of 2003 when he moved to one of the world’s biggest clubs, Manchester United, to ply his trade under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.

 

How many goals did Ronaldo score for Manchester United?

 

Ronaldo quickly took to Premier League life and became a mainstay in United’s first choice XI. It was evident that the youngster would develop into a world class talent but his goalscoring in the Premier League didn’t take off immediately. He scored four goals in his debut season, five in the second and nine in the third. Things really started cooking in the 2006/07 season, though, when he netted 17 goals and then, a year later, he scored an incredible 31 goals in 34 appearances to claim the Golden Boot.

The Portuguese was already a star at this point but those 31 goals catapulted him into the stratosphere and led to links with Real Madrid. Ronaldo stayed for a further year, scoring another 18 Premier League goals, before moving to Madrid for a world record fee of £80 million.

So how many goals has Ronaldo scored in England? In total he netted 84 goals in 196 Premier League games, a goal every 173 minutes. Across all competitions it was 118 goals in 292 appearances for United. It’s an impressive record but, given his young age, had be played for United at the peak of his career the numbers might have been far better.

He left Old Trafford with 3x Premier League titles, an FA Cup, 2x League Cups and the Champions League.

 

How many goals did Ronaldo score for Real Madrid?

 

One of the best Real Madrid stikers ever, it was in Spain was where the records really started to fall. 26 goals in 29 appearances in his first La Liga campaign would mark the last season for five years that Ronaldo would average under a goal a game in the league. Over those five seasons Ronaldo scored 199 goals in 171 matches, an absurd goal rate of one every 73 minutes.

Although Real were never particularly dominant in La Liga during Ronaldo’s tenure, only winning two titles with Barcelona tending to have the edge, they did absolutely dominate Europe, winning the Champions League an absurd four times in five years between 2013 and 2018, including three times in a row. Ronaldo was the primary driver of this success, with his goals making him the Champions League highest scorer of all time and as the season’s top scorer 6 times in a row, including an outrageous 17 goals in 2013/14, the highest in the competition’s history.

It was that Champions League success that drove Juventus to make a move for him in the summer of 2018. So how many goals has Ronaldo scored for Real Madrid? In total during his spell for Los Blancos, Ronaldo scored 450 goals in 438 games, a rate of one goal every 84 minutes. If you add in the 133 assists that Ronaldo contributed for the club, he made a goal contribution every 64 minutes. It is this record that has put Ronaldo in the conversation for greatest player of all time.

 

How many goals has Ronaldo scored for Juventus?

 

Ronaldo was brought to Turin to deliver the Champions League and, so far, it hasn’t happened. However, the goals certainly haven’t dried up and his scoring has been as mesmeric as ever.

In his first two seasons in Serie A, Ronaldo has scored 65 goals in 89 games with 18 assists as well. The scoring hasn’t been quite as successful in the Champions League with a still impressive 10 goals in 17 appearances marking a drop.

 

How many goals has Ronaldo scored for Portugal?

 

Perhaps the biggest difference between Ronaldo and Messi has been on the international stage. Ronaldo has been far more successful in the Champions League and also for his country. At the time of writing he has 99 goals in 164 appearances for Portugal, having led them to the 2016 European Championships and the 2019 UEFA Nations League title. He is, inevitably, the highest scorer in Portuguese history.

 

How many goals has Ronaldo scored in total?

 

Until this point, at club level Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 638 goals and added 223 assists in 850 club appearances. This is a goal contribution every 80 minutes throughout his career, a remarkable achievement given that he wasn’t prolific in the early years.
