Doncaster Betting Preview: She Do set for winning start

Steven Dowler takes on the £3,000 Place 6 in his Sunday Doncaster betting preview. If you like his tips then join his Syndicate.

12:15 – Maiden Stakes – 6f

With no previous form to go on in this opening maiden race of the day, this is no doubt a tricky little contest. That being said, Richard Hannon and Ryan Moore team up with the well-bred COLLINSBAY. Both rider and trainer do pretty well at this track with a decent strike-rate overall and this horse could well add to their tally.

One horse who does have experience over the majority of the field is SIGNIFICANTLY who shaped nicely on his debut where he finished second beaten just a neck having looked as though he would improve for the run next time out. Ben Curtis remains in the saddle on Karl Burke’s charge who could easily go one better with normal progression.

Meanwhile, Kevin Ryan has made an ok start to the flat season, and his only runner on today’s card is UNCLE JUMBO. He is related to some useful horses who have been trained by connections in the past, and he could be another one from the yard to go onto bigger and better things in due course.

Selections: UNCLE JUMBO, COLLINSBAY, SIGNIFICANTLY

12:50 – Maiden Fillies’ Stakes – 7f

This looks a two-horse race according to the bookmakers and I’m siding with SHE DO to make a winning start to her career. The stable has a high strike-rate with two-year-old debutants over the past five years here around 16% and we can expect this beautifully bred filly to make her presence felt at this level.

DUBAI FOUNTAIN is related to some top-class racehorses and could easily win this if the Roger Varian newcomer fails to fire. One of these two newcomers should have too much class for the other two runners.

Selections: SHE DO, DUBAI FOUNTAIN

13:25 – Novice Stakes – 1m3f

SWIFT VERDICT has a leading chance for Ryan Moore and John Gosden. He stayed on well to finish fourth on debut having been slow away from stalls. I think the switch to the turf today will bring about more further improvement so in reality if he breaks away on terms this time, he should justify favouritism.

AU CLAIR DE LUNE outperformed her 80/1 price tag on debut to finish fifth of 11 on her debut and the step up in trip here should unlock further improvement from her with Ben Curtis on her back this time.

Selections: SWIFT VERDICT, AU CLAIR DE LUNE

14:00 – Handicap – 5f

TERENTUM STAR is a solid sprinter who enjoyed plenty of success when trained by Kevin Ryan. He showed he retained his ability when scoring at Newbury when last seen. He is up 6 pound in the handicap, but remains very well-handicapped based on his previous efforts and winning achievements coming off higher marks in the past. He has also won three times fresh before so his fitness will be no issue, giving him superb each-way claims.

ENCORE D’OR has winning form on soft ground including here in a Listed event back in 2017 and has won plenty of races on the AW and on the turf. He made a pleasing return to action last week and has been dropped 2 pound with the stable among the winners. Therefore, he should go pretty well here.

STAKE ACCLAIM has to give weight away, but he has a good record fresh and handles both good and soft ground. He was subsequently placed in a Group 3 so this race represents a drop down in class which gives him a leading chance.

Selections: TERENTUM STAR, ENCORE D’OR, STAKE ACCLAIM

14:35 – Listed Stakes – 5f

I am keen to take on the market leader and 110 rated Dakota Gold here despite being in top form last season.

COPPER KNIGHT is rated only 3 pound lower than the favourite at 106 with race fitness on his side having run just eight days ago. Copper Knight is ground versatile and his fifth in last year’s Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes behind Battaash is the best form on offer.

The tough and admirable sprinter ran a good race on his return to action when second under top-weight at Newmarket last time and if he reproduces that Group 1 form at York last season, he could have too much speed for this field being the only runner in the race who has had a recent run.

The John Quinn stable will fancy their chances here with the smart EL ASTRONAUTE who makes his return to action. The seven-year-old remained a horse at the top of his game last season when rounding off his campaign with a fine third place finish in the Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye when last seen. Being rated the same as Dakota Gold at 110 but getting 3 pound from him, makes him a major contender to say the least dropping down in grade.

Selections: EL ASTRONAUTE, COPPER KNIGHT

15:10 – Handicap – 1m2f

Roger Varian has another good chance of victory on today’s card with FIFTH POSITION who was unraced at two, but made up for that missed season last year in most of his races where he was placed at Listed level before running a nice race to finish fifth in a Group 3.

His progression continued when eighth of 30 runners in the Cambridgeshire off a mark 100 which led to another good run in defeat when third last time out in a class 2. The son of Dark Angel remains on the same mark here for his return to action and he should take all of the beating.

DEREVO boosts a cracking strike rate having won three of his six career starts over various distances and has not been seen since finishing sixth in the Rowley Cup at Newmarket off this exact mark. He remains open to more improvement from this mark so it would come as no surprise to see him involved at the finish.

Selections: FIFTH POSITION, DEREVO
