13.15 – mallardjewellers.com Novices’ Chase – 3m

Colin Tizzard’s THE BIG BREAKAWAY has all the ingredients and potential to make a top-class staying chaser and concluded his strong hurdle campaign last season with an excellent fourth in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle. He gets a handy pull in the weights with his nearest market rivals and is handed a confident vote to make a winning start over fences under Robbie Power.

Of the bigger-priced runners, DON PENFRO could go well. He was useful over hurdles last season and looks sure to make a better chaser given his size and scope. He has to overcome an absence but shouldn’t be dismissed.

Selections: THE BIG BREAKAWAY, DOC PENFRO

13.50 – Planteur At Chapel Stud Handicap Chase – 3m3f

YALA ENKI has to shoulder top-weight but he has gone well fresh in the past and ground conditions have turned perfectly for him. He has plenty of top-class course form to his name most notably when finishing seventh in the 2019 Cheltenham Gold Cup and his last three performances for Paul Nicholls have been very good.

He finished third in the Welsh National off 155, then won the Portman Cup off a mark of 157 before finishing third in the Unibet Grand National Trial off an unchanged mark, all of which came on heavy ground. He’s actually 1Ib lower here and with the obvious point of Bryony Frost building up a good partnership with him, I’m confident this ten-year-old will run a big race.

Interestingly, Paul Nolan brings over DISCORAMA, who again ran a stormer when third in the Ultima Chase at the Festival in March. He was just touched off by Milan Native on his return to action and must be considered here with track, trip and ground to suit.

David Pipe’s RAMSES DE TEILLEE is a very smart sort, who has impressed over hurdles around the turn of the year. He made a solid return when fifth in a Group One over in France last month and looks well treated over fences off his current mark.

Selections: YALA ENKI, DISCORAMA, RAMSES DE TEILLEE

14.25 – Shloer Chase – 1m7f

DEFI DU SEUIL was disappointing when fluffing his lines in the Champion Chase back in March. However, he’s worth a chance to get back on track in his bid to land this for the second year running and the soft ground will hold no fears. He’s still the one to beat on form and if back to his best, this top-class seven-year-old will be tough to beat.

Henry De Bromhead’s PUT THE KETTLE ON produced an exhibition round of jumping on route to landing the Arkle over C&D when last seen. This is tougher but she’s in receipt of chunks of weight and she’ll be tough to pass if getting into her normal fluent rhythm.

Selections: PUT THE KETTLE ON, DEFI DU SEUIL

15.00 – Unibet Greatwood Handicap Hurdle – 2m

Having tipped the winner of this race for three consecutive years prior to only managing fourth last year, I want the winner again.

Alan King’s EDWARDSTONE has the leading chance based on his excellent novice form last season. He was far too keen in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle but still managed to finish sixth and this has been his target ever since he crossed the line. This big-field handicap should help him settle and he shouldn’t be far away off a lenient-looking mark of 142.

Paul Nicholls has a good chance with SIR PSYCHO, who won three times last season, twice on soft to heavy ground before finishing a staying-on fifth in the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. His latest fifth under a big weight on ground too quick for him in the Silver Trophy at Chepstow was eye-catching and from a 1Ib lower mark here, he has strong each-way claims with the right sort of profile for the event.

Of the rest, Olly Murphy’s HUNTERS CALL shouldn’t be overlooked. He’s been specifically trained for this race and his valuable handicap win at Ascot in 2017 is strong form. He beat Silver Streak, who subsequently placed twice in Champion Hurdles, Verdana Blue who won a Grade One since and, two former winners of this race – the Greatwood Hurdle, Elgin and Neitzsche. There’s no doubt he’s had his issues since, which is why we haven’t seen much for him. However, he remains unexposed as a ten-year-old and his latest fourth in the Galway Plate indicated that he retains his old ability. I think he’s got excellent claims of running a big race and looks great value.

Selections: EDWARDSTONE, SIR PSYCHO, HUNTERS CALL

15.35 – Sky Bet Supreme Trial Novices’ Hurdle – 2m

Dan Skelton’s THIRD TIME LUCKI was the best of the English bunch in bumpers last season having claimed fourth in the champion bumper at the Cheltenham Festival behind three very good horses. He has translated that form to hurdles, winning both times, and the soft ground this weekend won’t bother him having established himself to be very effective under all going conditions. This promising five-year-old is the only one in this line-up most likely to develop into a Supreme candidate, and he should extend his unbeaten record here with his stable in terrific form.

Selection: THIRD TIME LUCKI

16.05 – High Sheriff Of Gloucestershire Standard Open NH Flat Race – 2m

Gordon Elliott’s WESEEKHIMHERE has displayed a useful level of ability in winning a brace of Irish bumpers by a total of 20 lengths and shouldn’t be far away as he sets a useful standard.

GRANDEUR D’AME relished the heavy ground when slicing up on debut last time and has ground conditions to suit again and is feared most.

CONCEROE overcame inexperience to win at an SP 33/1 at Warwick last month and plenty of winners have come from that race since. He’s a very well-bred sort, who shouldn’t be discounted here with more improvement to come.

Selections: CONCEROE, GRANDEUR D’AME, WESEEKHIMHERE
