Cash Out drama as player sells ticket too early

There have been numerous examples of inspired Cash Out stories, where a player secures a huge sum of money at the perfect time, with their ticket ultimately proving to be worth much less, or nothing at all.

Unfortunately, one Betfair player’s Cash Out story was memorable for an entirely different reason at the weekend as they chose to pull the trigger far too early on their ticket, costing them a chance at an enormous return.

Playing the £800,000 1X2 Pick 15 pool, the player permed 24x £0.20 lines, meaning that they were vying for an £80,000 share of the Jackpot.

The ticket began in exemplary fashion and the player secured eight successive winning legs that took in matches from Scotland, Holland, Belgium and Finland.

It was after the eighth leg, the Belgian Pro League encounter between Zulta Waregem and KV Mechelen, that they received a tantalising Cash Out offer. With some tricky results in the pool up to that point, the 9,828 units that initially entered had been decimated, leaving just 1.78 remaining.

As such the player was offered £384 for the ticket, roughly 77x their initial investment. The offer proved too good to resist and they opted for a partial Cash Out, selling 80% of the ticket for a return of £307.

The ninth leg was another winner before the tenth and 11th legs kicked off together, both taking place in the Danish Superliga. The player had predicted Nordsjaelland to defeat Esbjerg at home as in addition to Midtjylland nicking an away win at Aarhus.

At halftime both games were level and were in the balance. A Cash Out offer of £211 was offered for the remaining 20% of the ticket and, seemingly too good to turn down, it was accepted, eventually securing £519 for their £4.80 investment.

With 100% of your ticket Cashed Out, it would be natural to cheer against the remaining legs, hoping one of them loses as quickly as possible to vindicate your decision. However, with Nordsjaelland claiming a 2-0 victory and Midtjylland snatching an 88th minute winner, that satisfaction wasn’t forthcoming.

The player predicted draws in the next two legs, Chapecoense vs. Bahia and Charleroi vs. Gent, and when the Brazilian clash ended goalless, alarm bells would have sounded. Gent provided brief hope when they took the lead. However, there was a late, brutal twist when Charleroi equalised in the 89th minute. With 13 winning legs, the ticket would have been worth £18,804 had it still been live but, unfortunately, that wasn’t the end.

In leg 14, the player evisaged an away win for Antwerp who duly went on to rout KAS Eupen 4-1, piling on further misery, with the Cash Out offer for their ticket then reaching an estimated £38,000+.

The player’s final prediction was a home win for IF Elfsborg against Kalmar. The away side took the lead in the first half and it looked as though the ticket may lose at the last hurdle, offering some small consolation. However, fate was in a truly cruel mood and Elfsborg equalised in the 87th minute before robbing victory with a 94th minute winner.

With just 0.1 units left in the pool, the player would have won virtually all of the £80,000 prize pool that they had initially played for. It is truly one of the most brutal Cash Out horror stories that we have seen and serves a timely reminder that it can pay to be partially sell your ticket!
