Who are the best players in the Eredivisie?

The Eredivisie is Holland is known as a breeding ground for some of the greatest names in football history. The likes of Ronaldo, Dennis Bergkamp and Arjen Robben all started off in this league before proving themselves to the world at bigger clubs and becoming megastars. Dutch football may have been in the doldrums for the past decade or so but there is still plenty of talent within the division. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the best players currently plying their trade in the Eredivisie

Best players in the Eredivisie this season

Teun Koopmeiners (AZ Alkmaar)

AZ have fallen back a little way since they were fighting for the title in the mid-2010s but they have a promising core of players coming through led by their midfield general Teun Koopmeiners. Koopmeiners is everything you would look for in a central midfielder with excellent passing skills and is always able to split defences in a heartbeat. Not afraid to help protect the back four either, the Dutchman is always willing to step in and thwart attacks before they become dangerous. With all these skills and no real weaknesses, Koopmeiners looks set to be a midfield star waiting to take over Europe. Definitely one of the best players in the Eredivisie at the moment and could be a star in Europe in the years to come. Leeds have been linked with him already.

Steven Berghuis (Feyenoord)

It’s surprising to think that Steven Berghuis has failed to appear on the radar of many top European clubs given his consistent form for Feyenoord each season. The Dutchman has good pace and is lethal anywhere around the box having scored 58 times in 122 appearances for Feyenoord in Eredivisie. He enjoyed a best career return last season scoring 15 goals in 24 games and has an increased presence on set-pieces adding even more edge to an already dangerous offensive game. Berghuis is surely a force to be reckoned with should anyone cross paths with Feyenoord in the near future.

Mohammed Ihattaren (PSV)

At just 18 years of age, it is scary to see the potential that Mohammed Ihattaren could fulfill over the next few years. The Dutch youngster is a handful no matter where he plays if it is either on the wing or centrally. He is lightning quick and has an endless bag of tricks to bamboozle defenders for weeks at a time. He has already made the breakthrough into the Dutch national side and looks set to be their next big breakout star over the next few years. He is a player that the world needs to watch with caution to see if he can reach the level many think he is capable of. However, PSV fans would be forgiven for feeling slightly miffed at his refusal to rule out a move to rivals Ajax.

Renko Pasveer (Vitesse)

Some goalkeepers age like fine wine and Renko Pasveer is proving this as one of the best keepers in Europe despite being a remarkable 37 years old. The Vitesse captain has found himself in excellent form this season with a 50% clean sheet record in the opening 8 games of Eredivisie. He is showing the reaction speeds of someone in their mid-20s and is helping influence the younger faces around him. With such consistency, it isn’t hard to rule out Pasveer as one to watch in the short-term especially if goalkeeping emergencies become a common problem.

Lassina Traore (Ajax)

Ajax’s academy has been one of the richest sources of young starlets for decades now and the latest player set to steal the spotlight is Lassina Traore. The Burkina Faso international has both pace and power making him a handful for any defender to cope with. He is also quickly improving his finishing ability with 6 goals in 8 games in 2020 so far proving that he is very much at the top of his game. Complimenting an Ajax side well built for fast counter-attacks, Traore looks set to be the latest star to set the streets of Amsterdam alight with world-class footballing talent. One of the best players in the Eredivisie today and certain to be on the radars of the biggest clubs in Europe.
