Asian Handicap pools explained

Asian Handicap can be an area of confusion for those new to the concept or of handicap betting in general. So here’s our simple how-to guide to get you up to speed in light of the recent winners we have seen! Read on to see Asian Handicap explained.

Asian handicap is a form of betting that creates a more level betting environment between two mismatched competing teams by giving them a “handicap”. A goal deficit is given to the team that is the favourite, and a head start is given to the underdog. A simple example of this is Barcelona being the favourite against underdogs Alaves.

There are many different types of Asian Handicaps which makes it very confusing, however at Colossus Bets our pools follow the simple .5 ruling. In this case, you will see -0.5, -1.5, -2.5 for the favourite team, and for the underdog: +0.5, +1.5, +2.5 etc.

At it’s simplest level, -0.5 means the team would need to win by one goal, +0.5 means the team could draw or win, to have a correct selection. See below for a more in-depth example.

If we look at this Pick 20 Asian Handicap pool, you will see Bristol City are -1.5, and Burton are +1.5. Therefore they are starting the game either goals behind or ahead respectively.

In Bristol City’s case, they would need to score two goals in order to be winning the game, since they are -1.5 at the start. A scoreline of 2-0 is ideal, or any scoreline whereby Bristol City win by two or more goals. If however Bristol City win 1-0, this would be a losing Asian Handicap selection, same goes for the draw and any scoreline in Burton’s favour. In Burton’s case, they are starting the game ahead with +1.5. So it is essentially flipped. As stated, Burton could lose by one goal and their handicap would be a winning selection. A draw and any Burton win would also see this as a winning selection.

As a general occurrence, you will see games such as Barcelona v Alaves having the home team as -2.5 or -3.5. Closer games will be -0.5.

If you are completely unsure of the result of a specific game in the pool, why not cover both selections so you are guaranteed to reach the next leg?
