Arsenal, City or Liverpool – which Premier League team would be the best fit for Marc Guehi?

The January transfer window is open and Marc Guehi could be among the highest profile players on the move. Indeed, there is a lot of speculation swirling around the Crystal Palace defender.

Guehi is out of contract at Selhurst Park at the end of the 2025/26 season, meaning he could become a free agent in the summer. If, however, the 25-year-old moves on this month, which team would be the best fit for him?

Arsenal

Reports claim Arsenal are monitoring Guehi’s situation this month, although they would prefer to wait until the end of the season when the 25-year-old would be a free agent. It’s easy to see why the Gunners would be interested in Guehi considering the depth he would give them at the back.

Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera arrived at the Emirates Stadium last summer to provide defensive depth. However, both players have been injury prone with Hincapie frequently struggling to handle the physicality of the Premier League. This wouldn’t be an issue for Guehi.

Arsenal already boast the strongest centre back pairing in the Premier League in the shape of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba. Guehi, however, would still receive a lot of game time. The Gunners want to fight on all fronts for titles and trophies and the addition of the 25-year-old would help them do this.

Bayern Munich

Crystal Palace have done business with Bayern Munich before. Indeed, the Eagles sold Michael Olise to the Bavarians two seasons ago and recent speculation claims Guehi could follow his former teammate to the Allianz Arena. The move to Bayern has certainly worked out for Olise.

Reports suggest Bayern Munich want to wait until the end of the season to sign Guehi as a free agent. It has also been hinted that Guehi would favour a move to the Bundesliga champions over many of his Premier League suitors, perhaps encouraged by the success Harry Kane has enjoyed there.

Bayern added Jonathan Tah to their defensive line last summer, but are still somewhat lacking at the back compared to the strength of other areas of their squad. Guehi would be an astute signing that would make a statement about Bayern’s ability to sign the best players.

Liverpool

Had things gone slightly differently last summer, Liverpool would have signed Guehi for the 2025/26 season. The Anfield club were close to landing the centre back only for Crystal Palace to pull the plug on the deal when they couldn’t find a replacement so late in the transfer window.

Liverpool have been made to rue that. Arne Slot’s team have been defensively vulnerable with Ibrahima Konate becoming a liability at the back for the defending Premier League champions. Many fans believe Liverpool should have prioritised the signing of Guehi over Alexander Isak.

Konate is out of contract at the end of the season and there is little incentive for Liverpool to hand him a new deal considering the standard of his recent performances. Guehi would be a first team figure for the Reds and would immediately lift their level. Slot should be pushing for the centre back’s addition as soon as possible.

Manchester City

The most recent reporting claims Manchester City are now leading the pursuit of Guehi after Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol both suffered serious injuries, leaving Pep Guardiola short of options at the back. John Stones is also sidelined at the moment, potentially forcing City into the transfer market for at least one new defender.

Guehi would immediately slot into the Manchester City starting lineup. Guardiola’s team are targeting the Premier League title and those chances of finishing first would be boosted with the England international in the defensive line. Guehi is technically capable of thriving in a Guardiola outfit. There’s no reason to believe he wouldn’t succeed there.

However, Dias and Gvardiol will return at some point in the future which could knock Guehi down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium. The 25-year-old is too good to be sat on the bench for most matches and so must consider what the long-term outlook would be for him at City.
