Alexander Isak signing would make Liverpool’s summer window the best in Premier League history

When Liverpool spent a Premier League-record fee to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, most believed this would be the champions’ biggest, most notable transfer of the summer. Now, though, it seems Wirtz’s arrival at Anfield might only be the precursor to arguably the biggest statement signing in Premier League history.

Alexander Isak is one of the best centre forwards in European football at this moment in time. Behind Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe, there aren’t many at the Swede’s standard and it was for this reason that few believed he would be available in this summer’s transfer window.

Isak’s decision to inform Newcastle United of his intent to move on, however, has shook up the situation with Liverpool leading the race for the 25-year-old. As if capturing the best young playmaker in European football this summer wasn’t enough, the Premier League champions could now add one of the best strikers in the entire sport to their squad.

Liverpool already boasted one of the strongest squads in Europe. They will be even stronger after a summer transfer window that would surely be the best in Premier League history were they to capture Isak from Newcastle. The Anfield outfit is flexing its muscle by behaving so bullishly in the transfer market.

It’s not just Wirtz’s signing and the potential capture of Isak that has made this summer so impressive for Liverpool. It’s their signing of Jeremie Frimpong as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold and the addition of Milos Kerkez as the long-term successor for Andy Robertson on the other side of the defence. Both new full backs are notable additions. Hugo Ekitike is another strong signing.

Chelsea had a similarly bullish summer back in 2004 when they signed Didier Drogba, Ricardo Carvalho, Petr Cech and Arjen Robben in the same window that Jose Mourinho was hired. Manchester United also had a big summer window in 2007 when they signed Carlos Tevez, Nani, Owen Hargreaves and Anderson as reigning Premier League champions.

Even when applying this context, though, Liverpool’s 2025 summer window, should they land Isak, will be unmatched. Isak and Wirtz are both generational talents and they would be joining a team that strolled to the title last season. There might be no stopping Arne Slot’s side with Wirtz as their new number 10 and Isak up front.

It could be that Liverpool are future-proofing their attack. Salah enjoyed arguably the best season of his career last term, scoring 29 goals as Liverpool strolled to the Premier League title. However, the Egyptian is now 33 years old and will inevitably suffer some sort of drop-off in the coming years. Isak could help combat this with the Swede entering the peak years of his career.

Wirtz’s signing is possibly indicative of Slot’s intent to evolve Liverpool in his second season at the club. The Dutch coach favoured a more possession-orientated approach than Jurgen Klopp ever did during his time at Feyenoord and Wirtz is the sort of player who could facilitate this transition.

Liverpool are the best run club in the Premier League at this moment in time. They have demonstrated that over the past few years, culminating in the successful handover of managerial power from Klopp to Slot last season. This summer’s transfer business is another indicator of their ability to use the transfer market better than anyone else.

Last summer, Liverpool didn’t make any signings because they didn’t need to. This summer, they have spotted an opportunity to make a major leap forward when so many of their rivals are rebuilding. Isak and Wirtz might make Liverpool unstoppable. Their arrival at Anfield could herald a new age of dominance for the Reds.
