CATCH HIM DERRY is only 2lb higher than when third in the Pertemps last time out and must have a serious chance in this weaker race, while Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 placed BILL JOYCE looks well handicapped and Martin Pipe runner-up ACT OF AUTHORITY are others to consider.

13.55 Turners Mersey Novices’ Hurdle

The unbeaten HORACES PEARL has winning form at this course and has looked a smart prospect in each of his wins, so he’s my main pick in this race. MIAMI MAGIC has done little wrong under rules as well and should be able to make the places. Two against the field.

14.30 William Hill Handicap Chase

HAPPYGOLUCKY ran well to finish fourth in last month’s Ultima and has won over C&D off a 10lb higher mark, so he must be backed. DOCPICKEDME is starting to string together good pieces of form and a repeat of his latest Doncaster success would give him solid place claims.

15.05 Ivy Liverpool Hurdle 

STRONG LEADER bolted up in this race twelve months ago and this doesn’t look like a stronger renewal, so with plenty in his favour, he’s fancied to make a bold bid to retain his title. Former Stayers’ Hurdle winner TEAHUPOO is played as cover to at least fill the frame.

16.00 Randox Grand National Handicap Chase

STUMPTOWN has proved a revelation in the Cross Country division and likewise stablemate PERCEVAL LEGALLOIS, they both come into the race at the peak of their powers. I think they both have outstanding chances for Gavin Cromwell. Nicky Henderson’s HYLAND is one to consider off a low weight and handy mark. This year’s Grand National looks an absolute belter!

17.00 Rosconn Group Maghull Novices’ Chase

ONLY BY NIGHT ran a huge race when second in the Arkle last month and she is fancied to confirm that form with Skelton’s charge and make it three wins from four in this sphere. As a backup option, KALIF DU BERLAIS can be noted.
