Goodwood Festival Day 1 Win 6 Preview | 28th July
13.50 Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap
An ultra-competitive renewal to kickstart the Chesterfield Cup. MIDAK saw his unbeaten record end in last year’s Epsom Derby but he’s shaped well on both outings for this stable and the combination of a big-field handicap, with Jamie Spencer in the plate, could see him run a big race. HENLEIN is of interest on just his third career start for Kevin Ryan and could exceed his odds. TORITO is interesting on his return and remains lightly-raced for his age. He cannot be ruled out having previously placed off higher marks, while PAROLE D’ORO and DIEGO EL QUESO are others to consider.
Tips: MIDAK, HENLEIN, TORITO, PAROLE D’ORO & DIEGO EL QUESO
14.25 Coral Vintage Stakes (Group 2)
HAFFNER confirmed the promise of his debut second when easily winning at Newmarket last time out and is worth his place in this grade. I do like the look of Ralph Beckett’s unbeaten UNDISCOVERED, who has won both starts at Salisbury with so much up his sleeve and could be a big player. AL HUDAIBA made it three wins from four starts when taking a Group 2 event at Newmarket last time out and has a good chance in spite of carrying a 3lb penalty.
Tips: HAFFNER, UNDISCOVERED & AL HUDAIBA
15.00 HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes (Group 2)
QIRAT holds a perfect three wins from three starts at this venue and caused a huge shock when taking the Sussex Stakes at this meeting twelve months ago. He bounced back to his best to defeat Never So Brave last time out at York and has the presence of the bang in-form Colin Keane on his back. I think he has a great chance of beating Lake Forest, who is better over shorter.
Tips: QIRAT
15.35 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1)
In what could turn out to be another terrific battle between SCANDINAVIA & TRAWLERMAN, I am struggling to separate them. Both are top-class stayers and go down with a fight. Both of them are head and shoulders above the remainder, so I’m going to put both on our ticket and hopefully they deliver us with another great finish in the feature event on the opening day.
Tips: SCANDINAVIA & TRAWLERMAN
16.10 Coral Rewards Shaker Handicap
ADRESTIA went very close in this race last year when second off a 3lb higher mark and must have every chance of going one better if turning up in similar form under Oisin Murphy. He’s a good horse on his day, while top-weight JASOUR is quirky but has the quality to feature in a race like this despite needing a big performance to defy the welter burden. THE MAN is another lurking in a dangerous mark and can have a day in the matter.
Tips: ADRESTIA, JASOUR & THE MAN
16.45 British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes
SEVERN COUNCILS was thrown into the deep end on debut at a Newbury but didn’t shape too badly when seventh in that Listed event. Ryan Moore has been booked to ride, so a huge step forward looks firmly on the cards. LAUNCH looked unlucky not to win first time out at Doncaster and is sure to go well.
Tips: SEVERN COUNCILS & LAUNCH SEQUENCE
