Match previews
Augsburg vs. Wolfsburg
Saturday, 14:30
Europe-chasing Wolfsburg travel to the Augsburg Arena to take on relegation-threatened Augsburg. Prior to the break, Augsburg were in dire straits and sat bottom of the form table after picking up just four points in their previous eight.
They sit 11th in the division’s home table. While it’s difficult to predict how the absence of fans will factor into home form, the familiarity of their stadium and pitch must still count for something so I don’t want to totally write them off. I’ll hedge this one by backing the draw and the away win.
Verdict: Draw / Wolfsburg
Dortmund vs. Schalke
Saturday, 14:30 (BT Sport 1)
On paper this one should be an open and shut case. Lucien Favre’s Dortmund side have been imperious in the comfort of their Signal Iduna Stadium, with the best home record in the league. Schalke, on the other hand, have been distinctly average away and sit near the foot of the form table with a solitary win and four draws from their previous eight.
Again, with the mitigating factors in play it’s impossible to know to what extent form and home advantages might carry over but I’m confident enough that Dortmind have the tools to get the job done.
Verdict: Dortmund
Dusseldorf vs. Paderborn
Saturday, 14:30
A real relegation six-pointer in the first week back as 16th-placed Dusseldorf take on Paderborn, who are bottom of the league in 18th. Paderborn are already ten points behind safety but, should they lose this, they will be nine points behind Dusseldorf and it would be very tough to see them getting out of trouble.
Unfortunately for Paderborn, there is little to find from the form tables to offer them much hope here. They sit 16th out of 18 in each of the form, home and away tables, losing their last four games. Likely to be very nervy, Dusseldorf have drawn a lot this season so I’ll perm the home win and the stalemate.
Verdict: Dusseldorf / Draw
Hoffenheim vs. Hertha Berlin
Saturday, 14:30 (BT Sport 3)
Two mid-table sides lock horns at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena, with neither outfit in danger of relegation or European qualification. There isn’t a great deal between them in either the league table or form table, though Hoffenheim are seven points clear if only a couple of places.
Something that struck me is that Hoffenheim have been fairly average at home so far and are 13th in the home table with just 16 points from 13 games. Hertha, on the other hand, are eighth in the away table after picking up 57% (16/28) of their total points on their travels. I’m going to take the draw and the away win here and hope for a slight upset that will take a lot of units out of the pool.
Verdict: Draw / Hertha Berlin
Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Borussia Monchengladbach
Saturday, 17:30 (BT Sport 1)
Monchengladbach have been the surprise Bundesliga package so far this season and sit in fourth place after 25 games, just two points behind Borussia Dortmund in second. They will have realistic Champions League ambitions while Frankfurt are languishing in mid trable mediocrity.
This is actually a very tough game to call. There is a real danger that sides like Borussia Monchengladbach, who had outperformed pre-season expectation, will have had their rhythm interrupted by the break. They travel to the sixth best home side in the league who were in pretty decent nick before the league was suspended. I don’t feel confident about any result here so I’m going to perm all three and hope it’s enough to get through to Sunday’s games with a decent Cash Out offer.
Verdict: Eintracht Frankfurt / Draw / Borussia Monchengladbach
FC Koln vs. Mainz
Sunday, 14:30 (BT Sport 1)
Mainz will vist FC Koln’s RheinEnergieStadion in Sunday’s first match, the stadium in which Joe Cole scored a wonder goal against Sweden in the 2006 World Cup. Mainz are sitting precariously above the trapdoor in 15th and are just four points clear of Dusseldorf who, as previously discussed, have a very winnable game against bottom of the table Paderborn.
It is vital that Mainz are quick out of the blocks to maintain that gap but in FC Koln they face the side who had the fourth best form before the break. The trick in this one is to weigh up quality vs. motivation. Will a superior Koln side make their talent show on their first match back against a highly-motivated Mainz? The two factors could cancel each other out so I’ll take the draw.
Verdict: Draw
Union Berlin vs. Bayern Munich
Sunday, 17:00 (BT Sport 1)
If you can find an angle to oppose Bayern Munich in this one, do so in the knowledge that 99% of units will surely be on the German giants. So, if you’re correct, a hell of a Cash Out offer will await on the other side.
Unfortunately, it’s an angle I can’t find. Bayern are the best team in the league and one of the best in Europe. They sit atop the league table, the form table and the away table, having already notched up eight league victories by four or more goals this season. I’m not saying they’ll win by that many but they will surely win.
Verdict: Bayern Munich
Werder Bremen vs. Bayer Leverkusen
Monday, 19:30 (BT Sport 1)
It’s been shocking to see the woes of Werder Bremen this season who sit in 17th, and firmly ensconced in the relegation zone, after failing to finish lower than 13th in the Bundesliga since 1979. They’re eight points from safety, albeit with a game in hand, and the 2003/04 champions look in real danger of dropping.
Leverkusen are enjoying a much happier season in fifth, where they remain in the Champions League chase. Bremen have the home advantage but seem unlikely to make it count, they have been the worst home side in the league with just five point from 11 matches so far. Leverkusen, on the other hand, have been the third best away side. Unfortunately the gap between the pair is too substantial for me to back anything other than an away win.
Verdict: Bayer Leverkusen
