5 former Premier League players set to return this summer

Every footballer dreams of playing in the Premier League one day. However, not everyone who arrives in England makes it to the top straight away. Quite often, Premier League clubs lose patience with such players, giving them a chance to prove themselves abroad. Players such as Kevin De Bruyne have shown that sometimes it is a smart move to join a club where you can play and develop before rejoining a bigger club further down the road. With the transfer window having opened up, we take a look at five former Premier League players set to return to the Premier League this summer.

5 former Premier League players set to return this summer

Marko Grujic

Marko Grujic will return to Liverpool this summer when his loan spell finishes at Hertha Berlin. The Serbian international has impressed in the Bundesliga, scoring four goals in 29 appearances in the Bundesliga. Grujic was the first signing made by Jurgen Klopp when he arrived at Liverpool, having been acquired from Red Star Belgrade for £5.1million in January 2016. According to Liverpool transfer rumours, Klopp is ready to give the central midfielder a chance at Anfield next season who will be welcomed back after two consecutive loan spells at the German capital.

Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho left Manchester City for Dortmund in the summer of 2017 for a transfer fee of £7.05m. Three years later, having established himself as one of the biggest names in the Bundesliga, he will return to the Premier League. This season, the 20-year-old racked up 17 goals and 17 assists in the Bundesliga for second-placed Dortmund. According to the press, Jadon Sancho is the number one target of Man United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this summer. Dortmund are asking for £100m but will probably have to settle for a lower fee because of the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic on world football.

Chris Smalling

Chris Smalling has done incredibly well during his loan at Roma this season. Though Roma manager Paulo Fonseca is keen to keep the 30-year-old at the club, the club reportedly can’t afford to acquire him permanently this summer. His contract at United runs until 2022 and, if Roma can not pay the transfer fee, the England international will have to compete with players like Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly at Old Trafford.  Alternatively another loan spell with Roma or elsewhere might be a better choice for the central defender who will still have eyes on making Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2021 squad next summer.

Tiemoué Bakayoko

Bakayoko has spent the last year on loan at Ligue 1 club Monaco, making 20 appearances in the French first division.

The one-cap France international will return to the Premier League this summer but might not be around for too long. The 25-year-old has made just 43 appearances for the Blues since his £40million move from Monaco in 2017 and will probably depart Chelsea this summer amid PSG interest.

According to the French website Le10 Sport, Chelsea are prepared to take a hit on him during the summer transfer window and let him go for a lower price.

Gareth Bale

The story of Gareth Bale is a different one compared to the other four players on this list as the Welshman didn’t leave the Premier League because he failed to make it in England. In fact, it was quite the opposite.

Bale left the Premier League in 2013 and, after seven seasons with Real Madrid, he could return to England this summer. The latest Premier League transfer news is suggesting that the 30-year-old will make a return to Tottenham. Bale could be allowed to leave Los Blancos this summer in an attempt to get his career back on track, with a return to North-London likely being his next destination. The biggest stumbling block could be whether Tottenham can afford their former star player whose wages are astronomical.
