Below is a little background on the iconic images in the montage:

Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ v England, Mexico 1986: this was a match (and a tournament) dominated by the brilliance of Diego Maradona, but in this moment he became a villain to England fans.

Laurent Blanc and Fabien Barthez, France 1998:  kissing the bald head of flamboyant keeper Barthez became something of a ritual for French players in the 1998 tournament – a ritual which did them no harm as they went on to lift the trophy.

Mario Kempes’ goal celebration, Argentina 1978: the opening goal of the 1978 Final, as Kempes charges through the ticker tape which littered the Dutch goalmouth. Kempes scored again in extra-time as the host team ran out 3-1 winners.

Roger Milla’s goal celebration, Italy 1990: one of the most memorable sights from this World Cup was Roger Milla’s ‘dance with the corner flag’ goal celebrations. Milla scored 4 times in the tournament and Cameroon progressed to the Quarter-Final stage before being eliminated by England, courtesy of an extra-time penalty by Gary Lineker.

Gazza’s tears, Italy 1990: the moment that Paul Gascoigne realised a Semi-Final yellow card against West Germany would mean he was going to miss the Final should England make it through. Had he known at the time it was the 3rd and 4th place play-off he was going to miss, he might not have been so emotional.

Marco Tardelli’s goal celebration, Spain 1982: a truly iconic goal celebration, the passion and emotion clear in Tardelli’s face as he wheels away from the goal that gave Italy a decisive 2-0 lead against West Germany in the 1982 Final.

Pat Bonner’s deciding penalty shoot-out save v Romania, Italy 1990: this was the crucial penalty save in the shoot-out, which was followed by David O’Leary’s converted spot-kick to send Ireland into a Quarter-Final against the hosts, on Ireland’s first appearance at a World Cup.

Pele’s goal celebration, Mexico 1970: the legendary Pele celebrates Brazil’s 100th World Cup goal and the opening goal of a Final in which Brazil comfortably defeated Italy 4-1.

Archie Gemmill’s goal celebration v Holland, Argentina 1978: Gemmill celebrates his brilliant individual goal in a 3-2 group match victory against the mighty Dutch side, but it wasn’t enough to send Scotland through to the Second Round.

Bobby Moore lifts the World Cup trophy, England 1966: the England captain is held aloft by his players as he raises the trophy on the Wembley turf in 1966.

Michael Owen about to score v Argentina, France 1998: the moment that the 18 year old England striker burst onto the scene, using his searing pace to leave two Argentine defenders for dead to put England 2-1 in front. It wasn’t to be enough though, as Argentina went through to the Quarter-Finals after a penalty shoot-out win.
