Who will win the Champions League in 2020?

The Champions League returns on the 7th of August with Portugal hosting the remaining matches of the tournament and its coastal capital city Lisbon receiving the final, which will be played at the Estádio da Luz. Half of the last eight teams are yet to be decided and, the remainder of the competition will be played in a mini-tournament style and, at the conclusion of this round, the remaining rounds will be single-legged. Liverpool won the tournament last season after reaching the final the season before but have been eliminated this time round. So who will win the Champions League in 2020?

Who will win the Champions League in 2020?

Atalanta

Atalanta player Alejandro Darío Gómez – aka Papu Gómez – believes Atalanta could actually win the Champions League this season. “We touched the sky, experiencing a unique and historic moment for the club and city,” Gomez told TyC Sports in Argentina. This season is the first time that Atalanta have even qualified for the Champions League and no other club has won it cup at the first attempt. Could the team in third place in Serie A become the first club to do so?

Atlético Madrid

Atlético knocked out current Champions League holders Liverpool in the round of 16 with a 4-2 aggregate win. According to the Atlético president, had the competition not been resumed, they deserved to be crowned champions for this feat. Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo believes only a “very special” team can win the Champions League without fans and thinks that team could be Atlético. Los Colchoneros are the only side to reach three finals without having won the trophy. Could they finally take that final step this summer?

Barcelona

The Catalan club are experiencing a dismal season after losing the La Liga title to Real Madrid, with the club underperforming for several months. Barcelona have won the Champions League five times, including four this century, but were knocked out in the semi-finals last season after surrendering a 3-0 first-leg lead to lose on aggregate against Liverpool.

Since winning in 2015, Barça haven’t made a final despite bolstering their squad with the likes of Griezmann and De Jong. Can Messi inspire Barca to land the Champions League for the fifth time in his career?

PSG

Paris Saint-German will face the Atalanta in the Champions League quarter-finals, not an easy opponent as they continue to chase their first Champions League semi-final. It is the dream of PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi to win the Champions League which inspired him to buy superstars like Neymar Jr. and Kylian Mbappé for record transfer fees. PSG have one huge disadvantage compared to the other competing teams though, Covid-19 led to the cancellation of Ligue 1 and, as such, the French champions have not played a competitive game since March. When asking ‘who will win the Champions League in 2020?’ not many are expected the star-studden Parisiens to manage it this year.

Bayern Munich

The German champions were unlucky with the draw as two other tournament favourites in Barcelona and Manchester City are in Bayern’s bracket. However, it also means that, should Bayern makes it to the final, they will be an obvious favourite to win, with PSG and Atlético Madrid the bigger draws in the opposite side. With Bayern Munich finishing the Bundesliga season unbeaten in their previous 20 games whilst winning the title and cup, Hans-Dieter Flick’s men are confident that they can land the Champions League too, eliminating Barcelona and Man City in the process.

Manchester City

Manchester City came second to Liverpool in the Premier League so will be determined to land the Champions League instead to redeem themselves. Pep Guardiola’s side are even more motivated now that their Champions League ban has been overturned and want to show the world nothing can stop them on their way to the top.

Manchester City have never won the Champions League and, with Kevin De Bruyne enjoying arguably his best season so far, this might be the moment to win finally do it. Guardiola has said previously that European results will define his era in Manchester. The Spanish manager has won everything with Man City except for the Champions League. So who will win the Champions League in 2020, could it finally be City?
