Who will be the next Inter Milan manager?

After a three hour long meeting with the board of FC Inter Milan, Antonio Conte will remain as manager for the forthcoming season. The Nerazzurri released a formal statement on their website confirming that Conte, Chelsea and Juventus’s former coach, will stay on for now. He fell out with the FC Inter Milan board over an apparant lack of financial backing in the transfer window when he openly criticised the board after a win over Atalanta earlier in the season. So is Conte leaving Inter? It does seem a matter if when, not if, Conte leaves the club. So who will be in the running to become the next Inter Milan manager when Antonio Conte does depart?

5 candidates to become the next Inter Milan manager

Massimiliano Allegri

When Antonio Conte was rumoured to be leaving Internazionale, serial Serie A winner Massimiliano Allegri was the bookies’ favourite to take over. Though this would not have been the most popular choice with the fans, no other manager has more credentials than the former Juventus manager. Though still receiving pay from Juve, Allegri is currently without a club after having won the Scudetto 5 times in a row with The Old Lady.

Carlo Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti currently manages Premier League club, Everton, after he was appointed on a four-and-a-half-year deal at the end of 2019. Everton only finished the season in 12th place and, after a summer of heavy spending, the pressure is on for a big season. The 61-year-old is known for his tactical prowess, adaptability and his ability to motivate his players and cultivate a good relationship with them. The former Chelsea, PSG and Real Madrid manager has a ton of experience and could welcome a move to Inter if Conte leaves.

Roberto De Zerbi

Though Massimiliano Allegri and Carlo Ancelotti are the obvious names in the frame to become the next Inter Milan manager if Conte leaves, Roberto De Zerbi is an outside contender. The young manager has been impressive ever since he took the reins at Sassuolo in 2018 and has been linked with a move to a top-tier club. Roberto De Zerbi’s Sassuolo finished 8th in Serie A, narrowly missing out on European football. Before De Boer took over, the 41-year-old Italian was even linked with a move to giants Barcelona.

Maurizio Sarri

Should Inter and Antonio Conte depart, Maurizio Sarri could be a high-profile replacement after having been sacked by Juventus after Champions League elimination by Olympique Lyon. Except for his period at Chelsea, the former Napoli boss has managed in Italy his entire career. Sarri’s teams are known for playing an attractive, exciting, and attacking-minded brand of football, based on retaining possession called Sarriball which would have been a popular choice with the fans as the next Inter manager.

Mauricio Pochettino

When Antonio Conte was expressing his intention to leave Inter Milan, Inter were rumoured to be looking at signing the ex-boss of Tottenham Mauricio Pochettino as their next manager. Sacked by Tottenham in November of 2019, the Argentine has been a free agent ever since. Pochettino favours a very high-pressing, attacking style of football and would be reunited with his former player Christian Eriksen should be become the next Inter Milan manager.
