Who scored the first ever Premier League goal?

The first ever Premier League season took place in 1992/93, nearly 30 years ago and in the 29 seasons since tens of thousands of goals have been scored. But who scored the first ever Premier League goal?

The first ever Premier League goal was scored by Sheffield United striker Briane Deane on the 15th August 1992. The goal arrived after just five minutes into the opening day of the season against Manchester United.

It arrived after Carl Bradshaw took a long throw which was flicked towards Deane who headed it past Peter Schmeichel and into the Manchester United net, in front of roaring Bramall Lane to create Premier League history.

Deane, just 19-years-old at the time, would double their lead in the 50th before Welsh winger Mark Hughes eventually pulled one back. However, it wasn’t enough and Dave Bassett’s Sheffield United would go on to win the game 2-1.

Deane would go on to score 19 goals in all competitions that season and 71 Premier League goals in total, just over a third of the 194 he would net in a career that saw him play for Doncaster, Sheffield United, Leeds, Benfica, Middlesbrough, Leicester, West Ham, Sunderland and Perth Glory. He was also earn three England caps, although never scored for the three Lions. However, he will always have the honour of scoring the first ever Premier League goal.

The second ever Premier League goal was netted by Coventry’s John Williams just four minutes later, in their 2-1 win over Middlesbrough.

Sheffield United would go onto finish 14th before being relegated the following season. They wouldn’t return to the Premier League for a further 12 years until 2006.

As for Manchester United? They reacted fairly well to their setback at the hands of Brian Deane and Sheffield United. They would eventually win the league that season by ten points, ahead of Aston Villa and Norwich. It was the first of 13 Premier League titles which they would claim in the first 19 years of the competition under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, they will always be part of an unwanted record owned by Brian Deane, who scored the first ever Premier League goal.
