Which Premier League team should I support?

Football fans are known for their loyalty. Fiercely partisan, once you establish a connection with a football club it is near impossible to ever break it. A study at the University of Oxford by anthropologists in 2016 found that “intense experiences of crucial wins and losses shared with fellow fans bind them more tightly to one another and their club“. However, what about fans who haven’t yet picked a team and support and might like to? How do you go about selecting which club might be a good fit for you? Which Premier League team should you support?

Ask any established football fan and they will tell you categorically that which team you support defines you as a person. Choosing a football club can make you plenty of friends but also some enemies. For example, if you support Liverpool, you’ll draw the ire of those supporting Manchester United and Everton. Crystal Palace and Brighton can’t stand each other so if you pick one of them you’ll definitely alienate fans of the other. Should you choose Southampton, then Portsmouth fans won’t like you one bit, even if they don’t get to play one of the biggest derbies in European football very often these days.
