The Drake Curse: Is It Real?

First came the Aaron Ramsey curse, a bizarre social media trend that linked Aaron Ramsey scoring a goal, with celebrities dying soon afterwards. Now we have the Drake curse, a far less malevolent trend which suggests that links football players having photos taken with the rapper before going on to lose their next game. So how many players have fallen victim to the curse so far?

Romelu Lukaku

The Belgian forward posted a snap with the rapper on the 13th March and, three days later, Man United were knocked out of the FA Cup by Wolves after a 2-1 defeat.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

After the Gabon striker attended one of Drake’s London concerts on the third of April, they posed together for a photo. It did the Gunners no favours whatsoever as they lost to Everton 1-0 in their next fixture.

Sergio Aguero

The Man City striker was the next to suffer. Is it just strikers who go to Drake concerts? He also attended one of the rappers shows before missing a penalty in their Champions League first leg defeat to Tottenham.

Layvin Kurzawa

PSG suffered their worst defeat in 19 years as they were humbled 5-1 by Lille at the weekend, prolonging their wait to win the Ligue Un title. What happened in the build up? You guessed it. Defender Layvin Kurzawa went to see Drake and had a photo taken with him.

Wilfried Zaha

After Man City were Draked during the week in the Champions League, they desperately needed the curse to be lifted before travelling to Crystal Palace on Sunday. Fortunately, Palace’s most dangerous player, Wilfried Zaha, had a photo taken with Drake during the week. Palace went on to lose 3-1.

AS Roma

So it seems as though the curse could be real. Either that or footballers need to stop going to late concerts before playing in big matches. Either way, Serie A side AS Roma were taking no chances.
