NFL Championship Games 2022 preview

Cincinatti Bengals @ Kansas City Chiefs, Sunday (20:00)

Many of us are still not over last week’s incredible divisional games. The first three were incredible but then we got to one of the greatest games we will ever see as the Chiefs somehow came away with a win over the Bills. This weekend has a lot to live up to.

The Bengals are perhaps here earlier than many would have expected but this team is so good and can’t be written off, despite being big underdogs. It is hard to nail down just what “it” is, but whatever that is Joe Burrow has it. He is a born winner.

Last week he was hit time and time again, but he kept getting up and he led this team to its biggest win in over 30 years. With Ja’Marr Chase to throw to, as well as Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd, the Bengals offence is as dangerous as any out there. The defence is not one that is going to stop Patrick Mahomes but which defence is?They can slow things down, however, and give Burrow and co. a chance to win the game.

The Chiefs are closing in on one of the greatest stretches a team has ever had. If they can go all the way then they’d have two Super Bowl wins and a runners up position in three years and there is no sign of this team slowing down. Tyreek Hill continues to be one of the most electric playmakers in the game, Travis Kelce is as reliable as ever in his ninth season and, of course, Andy Reid is one of the best coaches in the league.

But with Mahomes at the helm this team always has a chance, even without those others. The defence will be licking their lips at the prospect of going up against an offensive line which was destroyed by Tennessee last week. Burrow and co tore them apart just a few weeks ago and if they can’t improve on that then this is bound to be another shootout.

The Chiefs are rightfully favourites here, they have the talent and experience to beat every team in the league. But for me, this game is going to be closer than many expect and the Bengals have the capability of pulling off a big upset in Kansas City on Sunday night in the first of the 2022 NFL Championship games.

Prediction: Chiefs 31 – 27 Bengals

San Francisco 49ers @ Los Angeles Rams (23:30)

Both these teams went on the road as underdogs last week and came away with thrilling wins with game ending field goals. The 49ers have a remarkable record against the Rams, with LA’s last win coming in 2018. But the home team still enter the second of the 2022 NFL Championship games as favourites. After their excellent performance in Tampa Bay last week it is understandable.

The Rams got off to a flying start last week, just as they did when they faced the 49ers in week 18, but just like that game with Sunday’s opponents they let Tom Brady and the Bucs right back into things when they game looked won. Mistakes and a little bad luck could have cost them despite being up 27-3 at one stage.

In the end Cooper Kupp came through for the Rams, just as he has all season, and they came out with the win and now they host their divisional rivals in the NFC Championship. This team has talent everywhere. From Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey on defence to Kupp and Cam Akers on offence. They have players all over the field that can change the game in an instant and that could be the difference this weekend.

The 49ers offence was hardly on fire last week. They could only muster up six points – their only touchdown came on special teams – and they didn’t threaten too often. But they play the Rams so well that it is hard not to give them a chance here. The strength of this team is the defensive line though. Nick Bosa has felt a little like the forgotten man this season but he is an incredible edge rusher and is likely to cause Matt Stafford problems all game long. But he is just one part of an incredible unit.

This is a tough game to call, but in these huge matchups I tend to lean with the team that has more players that can win you a game and that is certainly the Rams in this one. But the 2022 NFL Championship games are so intriguing and if they are half as exciting as last weekend’s then we are in for another treat.

Prediction: Rams 24 – 14 49ers
