Newbury betting tips: Champ should hold off competition to win the Novices’

Cheltmental: Newbury is a track that I do particularly well at and this meeting is one I look forward to each year. As always, we’ll need some luck, but this preview outlines which I think I can take down the Win 6 again. Read on for my Newbury betting tips and, if you agree, join my Syndicate.

Newbury betting tips

12:15 – MAIDEN HURDLE – 2M ½ F

Some big names have taken this in recent years but it’s Nicky Henderson who sent BUVEUR D’AIR here for the same owner in 2015 and he was a wide margin winner.

SON OF CAMAS is held in high regard and it was great to see him put his Punchestown disappointment behind him when a ready enough winner here earlier this month. This won’t be easy though, with the likes of KING ROLAND & ASK FOR GLORY both ultra impressive bumper performers and the ex-pointer COCONUT SPLASH by no means out of his depth at this level of potential.

Price is always key but, providing SON OF CAMAS isn’t short, I’d side with him. I suspect KING ROLAND will be popular enough so he’s one I’m merely watching here but if COCONUT SPLASH is the same price as his last run he could tempt me too.

I’d expect ASK FOR GLORY to be at the head of the market too and he’s a horse I could only watch on his hurdles debut, despite him clearly being a very smart type.

Selections – SON OF CAMAS, KING ROLAND, ASK FOR GLORY, COCONUT SPLASH

12:45 – NOVICES’ HANDICAP CHASE – 2M ½ F

This looks a nice enough Novices’ Handicap Chase and, while FANON D’ESTRUVAL could be anything, he’ll have to be very good to defy his opening mark.

KHAGE will be popular again but I didn’t see enough in his last run to make me interested in him here but the trainer does well in the race.

I do like SULLY DOC AA who was given a favourable mention on the weekend preview put out earlier this week. It’s a guessing game with connections as to whether this will be the day that they push the button but I think he’s shaped as though he’s ready to be winning. He’s been kindly dropped a few more pounds and the step back to 2m could be the answer.

THE FLYING SOFA also deserves a mention and, while he wouldn’t be the best treated runner here, I’d give him a chance as he’s also stepping back in trip.

Selections – SULLY DOC AA, THE FLYING SOFA, KHAGE, FANON D’ESTRUVAL

13:20 – NOVICES’ HURDLE – 2M 4 ½ F

This looks a trappy affair with plenty of progressive looking runners so we might have a case where the best horse doesn’t win the race.

SEVERANO sets a decent rules standard and, despite the penalty, is more than capable of being involved.

BREWERS PROJECT & IT SURE IS are both making their rules debuts but the pair are very interesting with preference for the latter who gets my vote.

GRAND MOGUL ticks a lot of boxes but he’ll probably be priced accordingly and FAUSTINOVICK was odds on for his first hurdle run so will be well fancied again.

Selections – IT SURE IS, SEVERANO

13:50 – HANDICAP CHASE – 2M 4F

I can see the class angle with KALASHNIKOV and when you rifle through the field there doesn’t really seem to be too many well treated runners so he’s a worthy favourite.

GALA BALL always runs well here and will do so again, AZZERTI won with good attitude here last month and can go close again but OLDGRANGEWOOD would be a complete punt given that he looks lost at the game lately. The fact that he last won in this very race two years ago off a 10 higher mark means that, at the likely prices, he might just have to be a play and is added to my Newbury betting picks.

Selections – KALASHNIKOV, OLDGRANGEWOOD

14:25 – NOVICES’ CHASE – 2M 4F

CHAMP does deserve to be favourite here as he should come on plenty for that debut chase performance and realistically he probably doesn’t even need to. This is a tougher assignment in terms of potential and BLACK OP, VISION DES FLOS & DASHEL DRASHER are all capable of putting it to him.

Tactically this will be interesting and, whilst I expect CHAMP to land this, I do think VISION DES FLOS might be slightly overpriced. He’s a 6yo compared to the 7yo of CHAMP and the 8yo of BLACK OP, so despite that heavy campaign last season, he’s potentially got much more to give.

BLACK OP’S last performance is worthy of him being rated as the chief danger to CHAMP so you can see why he’s second favourite.

Selection – CHAMP

15:00 – LONG DISTANCE HURDLE – 3M

Another race which will be tactically interesting to round off my Newbury betting guide, and we have three previous winners in this field. PAISLEY travels so well until that flat spot in his races but this will be a different test given the small field.

He often needs company jumping the last and obviously does need to be stoked up once he hits the flat spot but, realistically, he should take all the beating here. He is, however, priced up accordingly and not one I’d want to be on at the price.

Any of the three previous winners could take this if they manage to catch PAISLEY OUT but BEER GOGGLES might just set it up for him if he goes off in front like we know he can do.

Selection – PAISLEY PARK
