Man City vs. Tottenham – Recap & Reactions

Wow. Just when you think you’ve seen everything football has to offer, we get Man City vs. Tottenham.

In one of the most dramatic matches the Champions League has seen, Man City needed to beat Tottenhham by two goals to reach the semi-finals. Challenging City to attack promises to make any game exciting but what we were treated to is something else entirely.

Raheem Sterling put City ahead after four minutes and Tottenham must have been fearing the worst. However, they had soon flipped the contest on its head, a Son Heung-Min double in the seventh and tenth minutes putting Spurs ahead. Remarkably, their lead lasted less than sixty second as Bernard Silva scored the fourth goal to make it 2-2.

The fifth goal game in the 21st minute as Raheem Sterling added another to put City ahead once more, at which point Jamie O’Hara, watching in the Sky Sports studio, looked as though his head might explode.

After an incredible start, the game settled into a rhythm with both teams realising they were capable of defending. However, in the 59th minute normal service was resumed as Sergio Aguero put the Sky Blues 4-2 up. For the first time, City had the lead they needed to qualify but then disaster struck. Fernando Llorente pulled a goal back for Tottenham in the 73rd minute, putting them in pole position to qualify.

City kept banging on the door but nobody was home, until the third minute of stoppage time when a deflected pass fell into the path of Sergio Aguero. He passed to Sterling who slotted it beyond Hugo Lloris to make it 5-3.

As Sterling slid on his knees in celebration and Pep Guardiola leapt into air, thousands of Spurs hearts across the country were breaking. Hysterical Arsenal and Chelsea fans were taking to Twitter to make gloating ‘Spursy’ jokes.

Then it happened. The referee was advised to refer the goal to VAR on the suspicion that Aguero was offisde. After a nervous wait, the decision came back; it was no goal. City and Spurs fans in the stadium seemed equally stunned, social media erupted. Here are some of the best Tweets that we saw.
