Four free defenders searching for a new club

Now that former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has signed a three-year deal with Benfica, one of the best free defenders in the world has found a club. The Belgium international played for Tottenham for over secen seasons and made over 300 appearances but left after the club decided not to renew his contract. Vertonghen had previously been linked with a move to Italy with AS Roma, Inter Milan and Napoli interested in signing the Belgian. We decided to take a look at four other free agent footballers who play in defence and could be highly sought after.

Free agent footballers | 4 defenders available to sign

Nathaniel Clyne (right-back)

Liverpool confirmed that England international Nathaniel Clyne will not receive a new contract and has left Anfield. The 29-year-old was acquired from Southampton in 2015 for £15.93m and was considered one of the star talents in English football back then as well as Kyle Walker’s main rival for the England right-back berth. However, injuries and the emergence of Trent Alexander-Arnold led Clyne to lose his place for Liverpool and England.

According to the latest transfer rumours,Clyne is set to return to his first club Crystal Palace who are preparing a deal for the right-back who has been training with them in recent weeks. Clyne came through the Crystal Palace academy and was a fan favourite before departing Selhurst Park to join Southampton. The defender has played against some of the best strikers in Premier League history so has plenty of experience.

Ezequiel Garay (centre-back)

Ezequiel Garay’s contract at Valencia ran out this summer and he will be looking for a new challenge in the coming months. The 32-time Argentina international has been out for six months with a ligament injury and will be leaving La Liga after four years playing for Los Che.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Inter are interested in signing the free agent footballer, seeing him as a cheap replacement for Diego Godin. The Uruguayan defender failed to impress at Inter Milan and Antonio Conte decided to sell Godin, who has now joined Cagliari.

Antonio Valencia (right-back)

Antonio Valencia is a free agent footballer once again his contract with LDU Quito expired. The former-Manchester United captain made 339 appearances for the Red Devils before moving to LDU Quito in his home country of Ecuador for one season, scoring one goal and providing two assists in 28 games. LDU Quito have decided to let go of the player citing financial issues because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 35-year-old has a wealth of experience and could still be useful for many clubs. The Ecuador international is hoping to return to Europe for one last spell before retiring from professional football. According to the latest rumours, however, MLS club Inter Miami and Mexican side Club America are interested in signing Valencia as a free agent.

Daniel Schwab (centre-back)

The 32-year-old former German youth international is another free agent footballer looking for a club after he was released by Dutch side PSY Eindhoven in July. Having played for Stuttgart, Bayer Leverkusen and Freiburg as well during his long career, the defender has a wealth of experience in the Bundesliga and Eredivisie.

Perhaps too old now to make waves in the Premier League, could he be a useful option for a Championship club looking to shore up their defence?
