Evan Ferguson is struggling for form in the Premier League
Evan Ferguson is struggling. The Brighton striker is one of the most exciting youngsters in the Premier League; at least that is the reputation that precedes him. But this season has been tough, and he needs to find his mojo again.
Last season, it felt as though the 20-year-old was destined for the very top, coming into it as Brighton’s young player of the year in 2022-23. His campaign began with an emphatic hat-trick against Newcastle at the AMEX Stadium, before he signed his second new contract at the club. The aim of tying him down was to protect against long-term interest from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and others. It was said at that time that Brighton would demand £100m for his services.
There were comparisons with Harry Kane due to his emphatic finishing and ability to drop deep and influence the play between the lines of midfield and attack. His intelligence and physical stature have always promised a lot for him, and having made his debut as a 14-year-old for Irish side Bohemian before moving to England, his first coaches noted his maturity both as a person and footballer, which provided a strong foundation for an impressive career. He was earmarked as their next big money spinning player, after the likes of Yves Bissouma, Moises Caicedo and Marc Cucurella.
But now, there is talk of a loan move to the likes of Leicester City and Fulham in order to regain his form and confidence after months of difficulties. Injuries have played their role, but after reaching grand heights under Roberto de Zerbi, he has struggled to match them under Fabian Hurzeler this season. Although he has featured in most games, he’s started just three in the Premier League, scoring one goal.
Such a drop off in form has been unexpected, and while Hurzeler has made a fantastic start with the Seagulls, they have lacked his quality in attack, though Danny Welbeck has scored six goals already. Lots of the noise around him is based around what he promises, and perhaps this is a warning for other young talents. Progress isn’t always linear; the hard work and luck must continue. But in Ferguson’s case, there is plenty of time to get himself back on track.
Last week, Hurzeler denied any possibility of Ferguson going out on loan and challenged the Irishman to prove that he deserves a place in his team.
“I don’t know where this information comes from because I said to Evan that I am happy he is here with the team,” said Hurzeler.
“I am happy with how he is training, what shape he is in physically, mentally. Of course, he is a young player and needs game time.”
“[I told him] accept your role and make sure you bring yourself in the mood and the shape that, when you get the chance, you are ready.
“It is exactly that which I demand from Evan. I never said anything to him about a loan or anything like this.”
There will be some clubs who view January as an opportunity to strike for a coup. Ferguson has shown himself to be an excellent striker, but strikers need love and support. Of course, they also need to justify their selection. But Brighton should hold their nerve and get behind him; nobody needs to remind them what they have.
It should be remembered that Ferguson is young and full of potential. Every player goes through tough times and he needs support to get through his. Plenty of clubs have watched him and liked what they see, if Brighton were to let him go, it would be their loss and somebody else’s huge gain.
