Chelsea players on loan in the 2020/21 season

Since Roman Abramovich took over the club, Chelsea have acquired a huge list of loan players at any given point. The Blues, on average, tend to have more players on loan than they have in their actual Premier League squad. In total, there were 28 Chelsea players on loan in the 2019-20 season with many of them heading out again this season.

The rationale behind the policy is to buy players at low prices and sell them for a higher amount after a successful loan spell with another club. If the Chelsea loan players return having done especially well, they could get even a chance in the first XI at Stanford Bridge.

With the 2020/21 Premier League season underway, we decided to take a look at five of the best Chelsea players on loan this campaign.

Chelsea players on loan in the 2020/21 season

Michy Batshuayi (Crystal Palace)

Michy Batshuayi is one of the most recognised of the Chelsea players on loan and has joined Crystal Palace on loan for the second time after signing a new deal at Chelsea. The Blues preferred to sell the Belgian striker but couldn’t find a club meeting the wage demands of the 26-year-old. However, this time the Batshuayi loan move will have a difference. With just a year left on his contract, the Belgian would have been a free agent at the conclusion of the loan. As such Chelsea have extended his contract by a further year and reportedly included a £20m buy clause at the end of the loan spell. As such, Palace will purchase the striker next season and Chelsea have protected their asset.

Kenedy (Granada)

Robert Kenedy Nunes Nascimento, or just Kenedy, only played 20 times in his debut season at Chelsea. Since his first appearance, he has gone on four loan spells with Watford, Newcastle (2x), Getafe and now Granada. Kenedy has returned to the Primera Division and will spend next season in the south of Spain once again. The 24-year-old versatile winger and wing-back wants to impress his mother club so he can hopefully return to London in 2021.

Ethan Ampadu (Sheffield United)

Ethan Ampadu spent the 2019-20 season on loan in Germany with RB Leipzig but will now try his luck with Premier League club Sheffield United. Though Norwich, Fulham and a few other clubs were interested, the central defender found a loan spell at The Blades tto be his preferred option. The 19-year-old wanted to fight for a place in the first team at Chelsea but, after the recruitment of Thiago Silva, opted to join the extensive list of Chelsea player on loan instead.

Danilo Pantic (FK Cukaricki)

Danilo Pantic will join Serbian club FK Cukaricki on a season-long loan deal, his fifth loan spell since joining Chelsea in 2015. As the 23-year-old is once again joining the list of Chelsea players on loan, it is clear that his career is not going as he initially expected. The former Serbian youth international was signed from FK Partizan five years ago but, the central midfielder spent the next five years on loan with Vitesse, Excelsior, his former club Partizan (2x), and Fehervar last season. The contract of Danilo Pantic ends next summer and it is unlikely he will ever play for the Chelsea.

Lucas Piazón (Rio Ave)

Lucas Piazon was regarded as one of the most promising football prospects in the world when he joined Chelsea as a teenager in 2011 but he only made one official appearance at Stamford Bridge. Since he arrived in London, he has gone on 7 loan spells away from Chelsea at Málaga, Vitesse, Frankfurt, Reading, Fulham, Chievo and Rio Ave. Though the loan spells of the former Brazil youth international were moderately successful, it is improbable he will ever play for the Blues again in the future.
