Barcelona vs. Liverpool: Social media reaction
It’s been an action-packed week of football in the Champions League. Following Tottenham’s narrow defeat to Ajax, Liverpool travelled to Barcelona to try and secure their own path to the final. Liverpool have never lost a two-legged tie against Barcelona in Europe and, with their domestic form so good, fans were in a bullish mood before the match.
One fan was left glowing about their brilliant season and had a clear idea about what was to come.
At the end of the day,
What a season Liverpool have had.
We are only going to get better.
Win the Champions League this year and then go and win the Premier League next year!
Up the reds! #LFC

Another pointed out Liverpool’s great record at the Nou Camp.
Liverpool have never lost to Barcelona at the Camp Nuo in the past, the best Barcelona have had was a draw
The last time Liverpool played Barcelona in Spain, Liverpool ran away with a 2:1 win
I see Liverpool vs Ajax in the final

However, unfortunately things didn’t go to plan. A masterclass from Lionel Messi was too much for the Reds who slumped to a 3-0 defeat.
Twitter was full of praise for the mercurial Argentinian. He was compared to another powerful figure.
Liverpool were dominating Barcelona i can’t lie but the Argentinian Thanos just snapped his fingers and potentially ended your season #FCBLFC MUADDDDD pic.twitter.com/GMOOZIBews

Whilst even Liverpool fans were gushing about him.
As a die-hard Liverpool fan, I am not even mad! I witnessed greatness last night from Messi ?? #BARLIV pic.twitter.com/44yX10LjVq

Virgil van Dijk has handled every striker in the Premier League this season but confirmed that he wants as little of Messi as possible.
Van Dijk (Liverpool): “There is no answer to Messi. No one has one. I’m just glad I don’t play in Spain to face him every season.” pic.twitter.com/M8n35TKmU6?

And his body language during one of Messi’s strikes confirmed as much.
Van Dijk went all the way to Camp Nou to get the best view of the Lionel Messi goal. ? pic.twitter.com/ae7gXVhG9V

Or was he just recreating a popular meme?
Van Dijk really pulled off this meme. You hate to see it. pic.twitter.com/ofx1V6Y86p

Van Dijk’s personal record at the Nou Camp was highlighted.

Meanwhile a lookalike was spotted in the stands.

Messi also scored a long range goal which was compared to a subsequent effort from Mo Salah.

Reds fans were unimpressed that former hero Luis Suarez celebrated his goal against them. Naturally this went down well elsewhere.
Liverpool and their fans fully supported Suarez when he allegedly racially abused Evra only for him to celebrate like crazy after scoring against them.
Unbelievable. ? pic.twitter.com/nEKCLhSZSX

Though it was also pointed out that they shouldn’t take it personally.

Prior to the game some unpleasant fans had been pushing the locals into a fountain in town. Fans were quick to reference this in their gloating over the humbling.
Liverpool fans throw locals into fountains. Messi throws Liverpool out of the champions league. ???

And this pun went down very well.
Liverpool have a fountain to climb to get back into this

Meanwhile, one Arsenal fan who was revelling in the defeats that their domestic rivals suffered, tempted fate with this Tweet.
• Tuesday: Ajax heroic away win against Tottenham. ❌❌❌
• Wednesday: Barcelona masterclass against Liverpool. ?
• Thursday: you know what to do @Arsenal to make my week perfect! ?
